Come early for the beer, stay late for the food (or vice versa)

Story and Photos By STEVE SEAMANDEL

Whether you’re looking to pre-game before a match on the court at the Bradley Center or take in a classy dinner without losing the contents of your wallet, Turner Historic Restaurant provides reasons aplenty to indulge in their hospitality, good eatin’ and selection of suds.

EAT

An apt selection of pasta and sandwiches await patrons of Turner Hall, and I mustn’t neglect to mention the Friday fish fry specials. The prices appear to be average for what I’d expect to pay at a classy-yet-casual downtown restaurant, although the dinner sizes will make you think twice about why you ordered an appetizer.

DRINK

Turner Hall offers your typical alcoholic’s delight: a typical wide array of mixers and even more impressive selection of local and imported bottled and tap beer. They also offer their own brew, which I found to be tasty. (Although I realize that this is more of a suggestion pertaining to your life philosophy as opposed to fine dining at Turner Hall, always opt for the larger of the two beer sizes. Bigger can be better sometimes, and this is one such example.)

ATMOSPHERE

I must say…Turner Hall is pretty cool. The layout makes the joint feel spacious and large, yet still small and quaint once you sit down and settle in. With two separate dining halls on either side of the bar, you never feel like you’re in the dreaded “back room” of the restaurant where they send the loud families with crying babies and really, really drunk people. The waitresses never seemed too busy to help out and make sure that everything was acceptable; a quality becoming more and more rare these days. (I was so content that I even drew a little smiley face next to my signature on the bill.)

Parking can be a bit of a pain, but we are talking about downtown here. Parking garages lurk hither and yonder around the Bradley Center if there are large crowds for an event. However, it’s best to plan accordingly if you’re in hot pursuit of a quick eat and Allen Iverson is across the street; your wait for a table and food are directly related to how many people will be at the Bradley Center later that evening.
