Damone's latest simply likable Print E-mail

I like this CD, but I have no idea why. It’s problematic because I cannot figure out how to classify it. Consider, if your imagination will allow you, a light-voiced female singer like Michelle Branch or Avril Lavigne being backed up by a band like Bon Jovi or Journey. The CD can be divided into several sections. First up, the good stuff.

“Out Here All Night”
(Capitol)
Released May 23, 2006
The first several tracks, “Now Is the Time,” my personal favorite “Out Here All Night,” “What We Came Here For,” and “Stabbed In The Heart,” all offer original material, over-driven guitars, and catchy riffs and tunes. “Stabbed In The Heart,” in particular, is a sort of power-pop ballad that ends up being oddly touching. It is also the bleed-over point for the next section: Power-pop.

The members of Damone, at this point in the CD, seem to have taken on the spirits of Japanese bubblegum power-pop musicians. Saccharine lyrics like “you can hear me on your speakers everywhere you go” from the track “On Your Speakers” abound in this part, along with bouncy drums and bass lines. And what better to follow the power-pop sound than, ahhh, '80s rock.

“Outta my Way,” the last power-pop song, is also the first 80’s throwback. Along with “You’re the One” and “New Change of Heart,” I can clearly imagine these tracks thrown over an image of Judd Nelson metal-fisting the sky during a sunset on a high school football field. You all know the scene I’m talking about. Any of these songs will conjure a similar, if not that exact, image in your fine mind. Perhaps we should hold a contest to see who comes up with the best, most mind-bendingly cliché 80’s teen movie scene vision brought about by listening to these songs? The winner will get a personal letter from yours truly.

Finally, the ending of this CD is a mix of a bit more power-pop and some folksy acoustic guitar songs. The last one, in particular, reminds me of a Queensryche ballad. (Yup, yup, yup. Queensryche. Yup.)

So, do I like this CD? Yes. Why? I’m not sure. Should you buy it? That’s entirely up to you. It was released on May 23rd of this year, so you can run out right now if you want. If you can deal with semi-metal music and light vocals, this could be the album you’ve been waiting for.
