Richard Jeni Memorialized Print E-mail
Written by JORDAN BRANDES
Monday, 12 March 2007
Stand-up comedian Richard Jeni died Sunday night at the age of 45 in his West Hollywood home of apparent suicide, news reports say. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Jeni graduated with honors from NYC’s Hunter College with a bachelor’s in political science before turning to stand up comedy.

In typical Jeni fashion, he had this to say of his future after college: “Imagine my surprise when it turned out the main thing that I was qualified for was to get another degree and teach Political Science to other people, who would, in turn, teach it to other people! This wasn't higher education, this was Amway with a football team!" (imdb.com)

Jeni began his career in stand-up in 1988 on HBO’s “12th Annual Young Comedian’s Special.” By the early 90’s, Jeni had gained notoriety for his stand up show “Platypus Man,” which was filmed right here in Chicago at the Park West Theater. Over the years Jeni would appear in many television shows making notable guest appearances in such shows as “Married With Children,” “Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist,” and most recently “Everybody Hates Chris,” produced by his close friend Chris Rock. His career was not only in front of the stage but behind it as well working on various projects as a writer and producer for projects such as “The 77th Annual Academy Awards.”

Jeni has never strayed far from the stage as a stand up comic and it is there where our story comes full circle. Lumino Magazine was set to interview Jeni for his upcoming show last weekend at The Improv in Schaumburg when Jeni mysteriously became ill and was unable to appear. It is with our deepest regrets that we inform our readers of his sad departure; may he be in a better place.

He got me through High School. He brought my mother and I together for one night to see him live. It's still one of my most cherished memories. And I will regret everyday that I didn't see his show last October at the House of Blues (Sold Out, BTW)

We'll all miss ya, man. Thanks for everything.
Never thought he was all that funny, but

So sorry this happened. I was never a fan--but he was a human being. Sorry he saw this as his only choice.
Was it suicide?

I'm in shock...He could make me laugh every time I saw him, the HBO show cracked me up even though I'd seen it many times...I knew what was coming and I'd still laugh.
So sad to think that someone so funny could feel so bad that he would have to take his life. :cry

He was true and made us laugh without shtick and smug putdowns. His shrewd and funny take on life will be missed. I hope his troubled soul is at peace.

Always sad when someone takes his or her life. Just goes to show you all the $ doesnt make you a happy person, nor does it buy away your problems . Sad to see you go Richard and the Stern show will miss u.
