Their debut, From Black to Purple, is the sound of a band holed up in some remote cabin, armed with a handful of instruments, a lot of ideas and at least a bottle or two of the strong stuff.
The booze-soaked opener, “Thursday Night Crowd”, oozes dark blues with vocals reminiscent of Gun Club howler Jeffery Lee Pierce. “Noir” follows suit with an elegiac intro that recalls Joy Division or the Cure until a harder-edged nastiness muscles its way in.
“Like the Way” knows how to play nice, flirting with pop and new wave. “Adulterized”, a bad trip psych with a chip on its shoulder, dirties things up again nicely. “Clouds through Flames” benefits from some Crazy Horse-style guitar, while “Troubadour’s Blues” wraps things up with strong vocal interplay, woozy atmospherics and uneasy coda. Listeners should keep their ears peeled for a hidden bonus track, as well.
