Making both Pizza AND beer is an ambitious undertaking for sure, but Piece brings their “New Haven” style pizza from the east coast into a town where deep dish is the reigning king. To accompany their innovative pies, they have made their own innovative beers that change seasonally.

ATMOSPHERE

Piece is a freaking barn! Seriously. It’s cavernous in there, which is nice when the place gets crowded because it doesn’t feel as packed in. Tables are plentiful and the bar is long, with multiple levels of seating from booths, hi-tops, regular tables, and even entire sections in pits or raised platforms. TV’s are plentiful, catering to the sporting crowd, but Live Karaoke is a weekly fixture so expect the unexpected when it comes noise levels, it can change in an instant. Make sure to enjoy the view into the brewery from the bar area and the view of the street from the large windows, allowing you to soak in Wicker Park/Bucktown. The staff is eager to help and knows their pizza and beer, so don’t be afraid to ask what would go well together, trust me you’ll have to.

CROWD

The people at Piece are as varied as their toppings, however, the majority of patrons are young business types or locals in their 20s and 30s. The dress code is very casual and lax, but the average Piece-goer tends to prep it up a bit. Piece is a safe place to bring your out of town family members who need to come out of their shell, but don’t let the mild demeanor be misleading, you can still get a little wild here.

ENTERTAINMENT / EVENTS

Aside from the sports, which play a very dominant role at Piece, karaoke is coming in a close second. Thursday night is your standard karaoke, with drunk guys and gals trying to belt out their favorite tunes with a few beers under their own belts. Saturday night is Live Band Karaoke. For your information, Live Band Karaoke ROCKS! This is a must see event, not to be missed.

SPIRITS

BEER!! And lot’s of it. This award-winning brewery has draughts that change with the seasons and some year round standards. You can also get more commercial selections as well as a nice selection of house wines and mixed drinks, but with all the wonderful beer, why would you want more? Go on Tuesdays for $3 Piece drafts and sample the bunch. Octoberfist is coming back soon, so make sure to get it before it’s gone.

GRUB

Of course they have Pizza, and you can get it Red (Tomato or BBQ Sauce w/ Cheese), White (Olive oil and garlic with Parmesan and Mozzarella), or Plain (Red Sauce, parmesan and garlic). Then you pick your toppings, which include standard choices but branch out to Mashed Potatoes, Bacon, Fresh Garlic, and much much more. Salads are big and plentiful, with plenty of dressings for those who wish for something different. However, you need to come hungry, start with one of their amazing appetizers (I highly suggest the spinach and tomato dip), have a big pie w/ plenty of beer in the middle, and finish it all off with one of Piece’s decadent dessert choices.

PRICES

If you have a job, you can afford Piece’s prices. To avoid sticker shock, be aware that toppings are charged individually before you ask for a pizza w/ everything. To save some dough, pay attention to their specials and stick with them. For a cheaper option, try lunch, which includes some interesting sandwiches as well as their full menu.

WHY IT'S UNIQUE

Doing pizza differently in the City of Chicago is usually a very very bad idea, but the folks at Piece have turned it into a very very good thing. Aside from the food and beer, Piece always has room, rarely making you wait for more than 5-10 minutes for a table, even in the busiest of times, not because of lack of customers though, it’s just that it’s big, a rarity in a neighborhood full of café’s with tiny seating areas. Piece is definitely worth a try and another and another…When you do come, come hungry and come thirsty, This place can fill you up with great pizza and simply the best micro brewed beer in the city.
