"Lost" Season 2, Episode 12 Print E-mail

One complaint of many “Lost” fans is how the writers have the tendency to squeeze in sloppy, badly written episodes in between very good episodes.

"Lost" Season 2, Episode 12: “Fire + Water”
Entertainment
Art

Original Air Date: Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006

‘Filler’ episodes may be an appropriate term. Well, for the second time this season, we were treated to one such episode, a dreadfully redundant Charlie-centric episode where the only scenes that clicked were the ones that did not have Charlie in them and did not take place in London. So that comes down to about five minutes or so of good content.

In some ways, the writers were definitely trying; this episode featured David Lynch-esque dream sequences, and they were thankfully more “Six Feet Under” than “Alias” – they actually seemed to be moving the story along and we learned something about the character. On the other hand, Charlie’s flashbacks were almost a complete waste of time. We learned nothing new about the character’s storyline, the chronology was very confusing and they were very redundant if you’ve seen Charlie’s other two flashback episodes (and if you haven’t you’re not missing much: Charlie’s flashback episodes rank in as among the worst of the series).

Another nitpick I have with “Fire + Water” is the show’s continued misuse of Claire, who is portrayed by the lovely Emilie de Ravin, who couldn’t have looked prettier in this episode. When is she going to get a storyline of her own, already? When will she have her next flashback episode? Everyone else has had at least two by now, I believe. Charlie’s had three! Not fair! So, if you’d like to start a “Save Emilie” campaigne ala “Save Katie Holmes” and “Save Fionna Apple,” lemme know on the boards, k?

So, “Lost” producers, please stop catering to your stars who happened to have appeared in a certain movie called “Lord of the Rings,” and start paying attention to the actors you have that the fans actually care about.

IN OTHER DEVELOPMENTS:

Hurley and Libby were impossibly cute together. Notice how dodgy she became when Hurley suddenly realized he knew her from somewhere else, before the island. Perhaps Libby, who we know is a Psychologist, worked at the mental hospital Hurley was at before his lottery mishap?

*Rating: 2 out of 5 toy airplanes

The only things saving this episode from ‘worst of the season’ are the wonderfully artsy dream sequences and the awesome Hurley/Libby sparkage. Otherwise, don’t bother downloading this one from iTunes. If you are a Charlie fan, try Season 1’s “Homecoming,” a much, much better Charlie episode than this one.

* Don’t know what the toy airplanes are? Then you need to watch Season 1’s “Whatever the Case May Be,” which also happens to be one of the series’ best episodes.
