Santullo’s Eatery is a dive full of potential. But that is about as good as it gets. Really, what it boils down to is that service has fallen by the wayside at this Wicker Park restaurant, something that the grittiest of the “greasy spoons” can grasp and Santullo’s can’t seem to.

ATMOSPHERE
At the surface, this place seems like a wholesome, hearty, family owned business. Scratch a little deeper and you’ll find that the pictures adorning the walls are fakes, there is no “Mama Santullo” and there never was. Other than that, the seating is comfortable and inviting, I suggest the booths if you’re going to stay a while. Big windows provide a view of the crowd on North avenue, which becomes increasingly interesting in the wee hours of the morning.
CROWD
Well, seeing that there aren’t many quality pizza-by-the-slice places around, it’s pretty much everybody who is craving a slice. Hipsters, Artists, Preps, Rockers, Burnouts, Lawyers, Doctors, Students, the whole damn scale is represented here.
SPIRITS
Santullo’s offers Cold beer, wine, and soda all at reasonable prices; Nothing hard and nothing out of the ordinary.
GRUB
This is the bright spot for Santullo’s. The food is damn good. The pizza is one of the best New York Styles in the city, offering innovative ingredients and combinations. Good salads and toasted sandwiches make up a well rounded menu.
PRICES
Prices are fair, in the mid range, not cheap but not expensive either. A slice will run you three and a quarter but watch for happy hour specials to save a boatload.
WHY IT'S UNIQUE
Santullo’s has a prime location near the six corners and has managed to stay a fixture in that neighborhood, especially late at night on the weekends. For all they have, one thing stands out above the rest and really makes it hard for this reviewer to go back. Slow and moody service from a staff, that in general, would rather be anywhere but there. While some places have made a name by providing a rude service (Ed Debevic’s, The Weiners Circle, to name two) Santullo’s does not come from a theatrical vein. Unfortunately, that is the one problem holding them back.

bum rush Written by Guest on 2007-08-19 21:43:20 I entered Santullo's to get a slice. The waitress threw a plastic glove in my face, refused to apologize and the cook told me to, "Go," when I threw the glove back at her. I think that they have infested the entire Flat Iron with mice and rats and rude snots from the suburbs. |
