The rough peeling walls of the ornate Congress Theater mirrored the harsh music that emanated from the speakers as the Jagermeister Music Tour brought four hard rock bands through Chicago on a Tuesday night. The intense sounds of headliners Staind and Three Days Grace were matched by the energy of the crowd that packed the theater.

Staind last performed in the Windy City only last year in November, but the fans were more than happy to welcome them back with fists pumping and lighters swaying. The Massachusetts-based rock band performed a mix of the powerful melancholy songs it is best known for and equally intense hard rock tunes. A haze seeped through the room, hiding the intricate designs on the domed-ceiling and setting the stage for lead singer Aaron Lewis to lead the band through its ninety-minute set.

The band didn’t ease the crowd into its set; they just came in and raised the intensity that immediately drove fists into the air. This continued through the first half of the set, with a loudness that not only shook the concrete walls, but also vibrated eardrums. Included was the single “So Far Away” from their 2003 release 14 Shades of Grey, which was the obvious crowd favorite.

However, it was when Lewis switched to his acoustic guitar and the band slowed things down that the reaction from the crowd almost matched the decibels coming from the speakers. The band left the stage, leaving only Lewis onstage, which allowed him to perfectly showcase those powerful vocals. The rest of the set consisted of their popular tunes and sing-alongs, including “Outside,” “Right Here,” and “It’s Been Awhile.”

Staind followed Three Days Grace onstage, and the Canadian-based band proved they weren’t in Staind’s shadow. The band pimped its soon-to-be released album One-X, the band’s sophomore effort. From this CD, the band rocked songs including “Pain” and “Animal I’ve Become.” Despite technical difficulties with lead singer Adam Gontier’s mic, the crowd still raged and pumped their fists in appreciation for their effort. It was Three Days Grace’s hit “(I Hate) Everything About You” which closed the set, and in turn was the highlight of their show. Also currently on the Jagermeister Music Tour are bands Hurt and Mindsight, so get there early and make a night of it.
