But will the momentum last through the next few episodes before the season finale?
Anyway, we were treated to a Claire-centric storyline this episode, and it was awesome. We didn’t quite get to see Claire before her tenure on Craphole island, but we did get to see Claire flashing back to her missing time last season when she was abducted.
The flashbacks-to-island-action were tense and memorable, which are two adjectives that I have a hard time putting into the other characters’ flashbacks this season. We got to see the wonderful Ethan character return, pre-bullet wound, and we also get to see what we thought was the leader of the others, scraggly beard-man, sans beard.
Rousseau is back again after last episode, and she’s seem more cryptic and insane than usual, which isn’t entirely a bad thing.
Kate, Claire, and Rousseau go all “Charlie’s Angels” in an attempt to solve the mysteries behind Claire’s flashbacks, and the results are awesome. Kate says to Sawyer when he offers to tag along, “It’s a girl thing.” I was giddy with delight. Feminism in television? Rocks my socks.
The season-long plot was advanced quite nicely as well in this episode. Henry, the supposed stranded millionaire becomes more likely to be an other when he starts messing with Locke’s head and makes an obvious attempt to set up a power struggle between Locke and Jack. Earlier in the episode, the Charlie’s Angels (Lost Angels? No… Dharma Angels? Too cheesy… let’s stick with ‘Women Scorned’ and leave it at that) discover another hatch, along with fake castaway clothes, fake beards and theatrical glue. Interesting…
By the episode’s end, Emile de Ravin got a huge chunk of screen time to justify being in the main credits, pre-bullet Ethan professes his love for Claire, and Locke goes all Hannibal Lector on a pile of dishes. I’m so into this.
IN OTHER DEVELOPMENTS…
Was it just me, or did the previously contain nearly as much plot as this week’s episode? Let’s see… Locke goes to Anna-Lucia to get rid of Henry, Henry goes to Anna-Lucia to prove himself innocent, Sun may or may not be pregnant, and Sawyer looks ridiculously awesome in his new glasses.
Also, where the hell is Michael?! This is the fourth episode in a row without any sign of actor Harold Perrineau. Is there some drama going on behind the scenes?
Thankfully, we did get to see some more of the lovely Cynthia Watros, who plays Libby, and the writers took advantage of the fact that the character is a psychiatrist. Yay! Does this mean a joint Hurley-Libby flashback episode is on the horizon?
Rating: 4 out of 5 fake beards
Enough action and character development to make up for some of the cruddy last few episodes. Good job “Lost” writers!
One nitpicky comment… I don’t usually notice or comment on such a thing, but Evangeline Lilly, who plays Kate, was dreadful in this episode, almost ruining any scene she was in. The thing that bothered me in particular was all her reaction shots: they seemed so inappropriate to the scenes they were in. Anyway, the rest of the cast was wonderful as usual.
