On one hand, we were treated to some excellent flashbacks for craphole island’s hottest married couple, Jin and Sun, and we get the return of bald-Asian-guy from earlier in the season, and it’s awesome. We learn that Sun and Jin have been trying to have a baby for about a year and Sun is anxious about the idea because she’s planning on leaving Jin anyway.
Fast-forwarding to craphole island, Sun discovers that she is pregnant, but unless she immaculately conceived, the pregnancy is impossible: Jin is infertile. Wackiness ensues! Did Sun sleep with handsome bald-Asian-guy? Did the island give Jin super-sperm? The episode leaves the answer ambiguous, and by this show’s timeline, it will be, oh, season five before we find out the answer.
Elsewhere on craphole island, the B plot (or is it the A plot?) goes on COMPLETELY UNRELATED to the episode’s flashbacks. Locke brings in Anna Lucia to interrogate Henry Gale, the man the Lostaways can’t decide whether he’s an other or not. Anna gets Gale to draw her a map to his supposed air balloon, and enlisting the help of Sayid and an even-more-useless-than-usual Charlie (ugh) they go and investigate. Will Gale’s map lead them to his air-balloon? Or is Gale leading them to a trap? Will we find out, oh, sometime before May? Based on the rate this show has reruns, probably not.
IN OTHER DEVELOPMENTS…
Surprisingly, there really are no other developments in this episode. We see that Hurley is still eating food from his hidden stash and we learn that Kate is becoming suspicious of Jack for spending too much time in the hatch, but that’s about it. On a side-note, Anna Lucia was very interesting in this episode, which the same can’t be said for about 90% of the other 20 or so characters in this show.
Rating: 3 out of 5 pregnancy tests
This show has officially lost (no pun intended) its enormous level of quality it set in season one and earlier this season. None of the story elements are working for me here, and it’s frustrating having whole sets of characters disappear from episode to episode. Where was Libby and Mr. Ecko in this episode? Why did so much screen-time go to Henry Gale when he’s probably going to be gone in a few episodes when they either find out he’s an other or they kill him by accident, thinking he’s really an other? Whatever. Here’s hoping things begin to improve before the season’s over.
