The herd is back together in this sequel to the 2001 hit, and it’s as if nothing has changed for the trio. Sid, Diego, and Manny, voiced by John Leguizamo, Dennis Leary, and Ray Romano respectively, are still best bickering buddies having a great time in their new home: an icy playground deep in the valley.

With a glacier-like dam melting over their heads, this unlikely herd and all of their neighbors have to flee their home to avoid the inevitable flood of frigid water to come
Setting off on their journey, the friends quickly run into trouble. Manny the mammoth is gawked at and taunted by the rest of the animals for being what they suspect is the last of his kind while Sid the sloth and Diego the saber-tooth tiger find estimable foes in a pair of unruly possums. Only when their BIG sister Ellie (Queen Latifah), appears do things start to look up. Though she sleeps hanging from trees, is afraid of predators during the day, and thinks she’s a possum, Ellie is most definitely…a woolly mammoth.
From this point on, the film takes on the tones of self-discovery along with the adventure. Diego attempts to conquer his fears, Sid does his best to discover where he really belongs, and Manny melts his lonely heart as he tries to help Ellie realize who and what she truly is. Not without fun and games, though, does this sequel tell its story. The dedicated and unlucky squirrel still shows up at all the right times, eternally chasing after his nut, and Sid and the possum twins tease and torment the rest of the group to hilarious ends.
Despite a few abrupt emotional turns and a couple of too-frank overtures, “Ice Age: The Meltdown” is almost as exciting an adventure as the first film, with all the right jokes at all the right times. Voiced by an already spot-on cast, the addition of Queen Latifah rounds out this film and allows it a range of emotion the original wasn’t capable of. Pouring into a desperately dry market, this is the movie for the whole family to see…and maybe even see again. Powered by AkoComment 2.0! |
