The original incarnation of Kiss (circa 1973) wouldn’t think twice about luring your daughter out for a night of elicit sex, drugs and rock and roll and then leaving her upon your doorstep in the morning with a little extra memento nine months later from the concert. But, since their reincarnation in 1996 Kiss seems more easy going than edgy.
In what should have been a shock-umentary show depicting the band's 2004 tour you see more housewives than harlots in the audience these days. Yes some of the mommies are in tight fitting sweaters and skin-tight jeans, but those same mommies brought their kids to the show painted up like little groupies from the ’70s.
With that all in mind Kiss does deliver a damn good show. With this DVD the band focuses more on their obscure catalogue that many of the nostalgic mommies and daddies have not seen on pervious tours.
Some of the songs include "Makin' Love", "She", "Tears are Falling", "Got to Choose", "Love her all I can", "I Want You", and "War Machine". It is impressive that they took the time to relearn some of the older stuff and let me tell you, it still holds up, unlike Paul Stanley who is currently suffering from some hip trouble. Which is why you didn’t see him jumping around like he usually does.
Also included with the DVD is behind the scenes bonus footage (some of which is inter cut throughout the 20 song show) that includes segments in the dressing room, meet and greets, sound checks, photo sessions, rehearsals and a bowling party. The DVD also includes a feature known as “Power Vision” which allows you to switch camera angels during certain songs to focus on your favorite band member.
The real gem of this collection is not their political speech about how great America is just before performing “God Gave Rock N’ Roll To You” but the footage of their Australian Tour. This is where Kiss really rocks out, but you only get to see one song from that tour. Kiss is often criticized that they hide behind elaborate stage show antics but having to strip down their show to fit into the smaller Australian theaters is where the true thrust of the band comes through. They should have made that DVD instead of the Kid Tested Mother Approved DVD. None the less, this DVD still has all the essentials that you need to rock and roll all night, but now Kiss has given you a curfew.
