People brings heat, fails to ignite Print E-mail

New to Wicker Park, People: Spanish Tapas & World Music Lounge is definitely something different to the neighborhood, but more in the sense of the square peg in the round hole than a breath of fresh air. Wasting most of its potential, ‘People’ is just trying to do too many things.

ATMOSPHERE

Inside the design is very classic, and beautiful, yet a bit austere in its décor. It has a warm color scheme that matches its temperature (it’s hot in this place) but does not take a turn towards the comforts of home. The small space means that the tables are literally side-by-side, making some feel intrusive to their neighbors. However, there is a good chance that you won’t overhear anything as the noise level is deafening, aside from the roar of the people chatting and mulling, there is the house music which tries to compete with the din creating an environment in-conducive to casual conversation, a feature that the restaurant’s website touts rather boastfully.

CROWD

Let us not use labels, but I will say there is a lot of expendable income here. The crowd is young and trendy, twenty-five to thirty. They would be just as comfortable at the Urban Outfitters down the street as they are here.

ENTERTAINMENT / EVENTS

Live music and DJ’s provide the entertainment at ‘People’.

SPIRITS

The lounge boasts a full bar but the real gem here is the Sangria, available in red or white. Try it with Champagne for a twist.

GRUB

Here’s the thing, the food here is tasty, it’s pretty reasonably priced too. It’s just not anything all that different from what you get at other Tapas places. Steinberg and Faye bring enormous potential to the place but fall a little short on creativity. The menu is gussied up with names for mostly common ingredients so beware of what you’ll actually get. The meat and fish dishes were all prepared well, but the vegetables were overcooked and the tortilla Espanola was overly bland. Try the Calamar Frito and hold off on the desserts.

PRICES

Food prices are reasonable and drink prices are moderate. Don’t let the advice of the wait staff bully you into ordering more than you need. You don’t go to any tapas bar looking for a huge meal and this should be no different. Order one more dish than you have people and you’ll be fine. Dishes run between 3 and 7 dollars.

WHY IT'S UNIQUE

People is the first tapas bar to open up in Wicker Park and a great idea in theory. However, the imagination needed just isn’t there, however the concept is very trendy and right now it’s one of the hot places to be seen in the neighborhood.
