In this painfully disappointing episode of “Lost,” secondary characters Rose and Bernard get the flashback treatment and the results are not what many “Lost” fans have been waiting for since the character Rose and her plight were introduced early in season one.

| | | We learn right away that Rose and Bernard aren’t longtime partners like many “Lost” fans have expected, but instead newlyweds who have only known each other for less than a year. This already makes Rose’s pining for Bernard in season one seem like a waste of time for long-time “Lost” viewers. Worse, Rose has terminal cancer – GASP! – and the “Lost” writers fail in trying to make this revelation anything remotely interesting. Rose sees a mystical healer in Australia, he can’t heal her, and Rose lies about this fact to Bernard. That’s it. That’s their storyline. The worst part is that this leaves very little room for any future story developments for our favorite interracial couple, not to mention any chance for future flashback episodes featuring them.
Elsewhere on Craphole island… nothing new or exciting happens. Just Locke being frustrated with the hatch, which we saw enough of last episode, and more love-triangle nonsense between Kate, Jack and Sawyer. Though we do get a neat and kinda-hot scene between Kate and Jack when they are forced into close-quarters with each other after being caught in a net. Oh, and Jack reenacts the scene from “I Know What You Did Last Summer” (and Scary Movie 1) where the Jennifer Love-Hewit character twirls around screaming “I know you see can me!” melodramatically when Jack says the same words in the middle of the forest, hoping to get the attention of the Others. Yeah.
IN OTHER DEVELOPMENTS… Michael returns! We haven’t seen him since episode 11, “The Hunting Party.” That’s eight straight episodes without any appearance (and barely even a mention) of him or Walt. What happened to him during his missing time? I smell a flashback episode.
Rating: 2 out of 5 wasted storylines Rose and Bernard, once totally cute secondary characters, had all their potential wasted in this dreadfully stale episode. What a shame.
On the other hand, it’s great to see Bernard, who is portrayed by an ex-“Angel” actor, get work. It’s even cooler that the actor that plays Jin is also an ex-“Angel” actor, and seeing both actors in the same scene in this episode made this “Angel” fanboy giddy with delight.
