In what will be heralded as one of the best final few minutes of a “Lost” episode ever, main characters Ana-Lucia and Libby get shot by Michael followed by the Michael apparently shooting himself in the arm to make it look like they were all shot by not!Henry, an evil Other the Losties had captured down in the hatch.
What makes the even so memorable is direction and the timing of the possible-double-homicide. The episode was mostly business-as-usual in terms of “Lost” episodes, but then all of a sudden, BAM! (pun intended). Ana-Lucia getting shot was fairly unsurprising, considering that the episode was based around her, and apparently any single female on the island who has sex or experiences actual character development gets shot *cough* Shannon *cough*.
But Libby getting shot? Totally unexpected, and totally awesome. The fact that Libby had a pedestrian subplot throughout the episode about having a date with Hurley and then BAM! the character got shot through the stomach made the moment completely and utterly memorable.
What does this mean? Why on earth would Michael do such a thing? Did he strike a deal with the Others in return for Walt? Finally, a “Lost” episode that actually creates anticipation for the next week’s episode.
IN OTHER DEVELOPMENTS…
Ana-Lucia and Sawyer get horizontal with each other, which would have been a big deal if two regular cast members didn’t get killed off at the end of the episode.
Henry gets violent and nearly kills Ana-Lucia at the beginning of the episode. Could he be more evil than we originally thought? Is he the leader of the Others?
Discerning viewers would have caught that there was a Hanso organization commercial played during the commercial breaks in this episode. Has anything else like this been done before? Could the “Lost” writers be any cooler?
Jack’s dad appears again in Ana-Lucia’s flashbacks. He’s now the coolest guest-flashback character on the show, having also appeared in one of Sawyer’s flashbacks.
Michelle Rodriguez, who plays Ana-Lucia on the show, is leaving the series after just one season. Knowing this for as long as many “Lost” fans have makes Ana-Lucia’s death not nearly as awesome as it could have been. Cynthia Watros, who plays Libby, is also leaving the show… which would explain by both characters got shot in this episode. Oh, and these are also notably the two actors that stirred controversy by getting DUIs during the filming of the show.
I really, really dislike the Michael character, and no, it’s not because he shot (and probably killed) Libby… He’s a badly written character given repetitive dialogue, and the actor’s performance is unlikeable.
Rating: 5 out of 5 bullet-hole wounds
Chalk it up to a sweeps episode to get “Lost” out of its nearly season-long rut. It’s too bad the season has been so uneven, because this fact weighs down this episode by means of B-plots and C-plots.
