Even though Sevendust had to cancel the show due to the fact that Guitarist John Connolly broke his left hand, the House of Blues was filled with hundreds of fans many of them Soil fans taking advantage of a free rock show. It was Soil's CD release show for their new album: “True Self” and what better way to kick off a native Chicago band's show, than to have some of Chicago's best up and coming rockers open up.

Ditchwater started off the night, followed by the hard-hitting members of Skank. With song titles like “Maggots,” “Victim” and “Circle of Pain,” this foursome brought life to the crowd and set the tone for the night. Lead singer Skunk early on paced the stage with microphone in fist with his arm fully extended upwards stating that the mosh pit was pathetic and that this was no Bell Biv F***ing Devoe concert. It seemed to work because by their last song, “Spider Mouth”, the pit had grown massively and had swallowed over half of the main floor.

Local Favorites American Motherload grabbed the baton and ran with it next. Their straight forward hard rock style kept the fans on their feet. They showcased a lot of their new songs along with songs like “Mud To Dust” off of their “Come To Life” album. By the time AML was done, the crowd and mosh pit was finally greased up and ready to take on Soil.

The new hit single “Give It Up” off of “True Self” was the song of choice that Soil open the night. It was the first time that there was an actual light show that you come to expect at a concert on stage. Too bad the previous bands had to play on such a poorly lit stage. Of course, that wasn't the only inconvenience the audience had to contend with that night. Throughout half of Soil's show, the sound man could not seem to control all of the feedback. Bassist Tim King and guitarists Shaun Glass and Adam Zandel didn't let that bother them, they moved around the stage keeping the fans energized and the pit continued to monopolizing more than half of the floor.

Almost half of the songs were off of the new album, which turned out to be a good thing. Although the fans love and respond well to the old songs like: “Breaking Me Down” and “My Own” off of “Scars” and “Can You Heal Me” and “Cross My Heart” off of “Redefine,” they still have a hard time with lead singer A.J. Cavalier singing them. He just doesn't have the same voice as former singer Ryan McCombs. Cavalier's passion for the new songs really comes through when he sings them live and the others seem to really gel and play with enthusiasm during them. The energy level of the band was transmitted to the audience during new songs: “The Last Chance” and title track “True Self.” The fans were even chanting: “Fight,” during “Fight For Life.”

Soil ended the night with “Redefine” and “Halo,” but it was clear that “True Self” is where the band and audience's excitement exploded Soil's heavy guitar sounds mixed with A.J's vocals has given this band a new direction to go in the metal world.
