"3 Minutes" I can stand Print E-mail

Now this is an improvement over last week’s convoluted, story-wrecking mishap. “3 Minutes” is one of the best episodes of “Lost” this season because the plot advances, we get a killer cliffhanger, the show makes good use of its ensemble cast and there’s actual tension throughout the episode.

Unfortunately, the painfully unsubtle performance given by Harold Perrineau Jr. (who plays Michael) nearly ruins the enjoyment of the episode.

In genre shows such as “Lost,” the acting ability of the show’s stars is important, but even if a show has bad performances, things such as “plot” and “action sequences” can usually make up for cruddy acting. But when you actually notice an actor who is flat-out bad (or simply overacts ever scene he or she is in), then you’ve got serious trouble.

Not only does Perrineau overact in every scene he’s in for “3 Minutes,” he makes already painfully bad dialogue (“I want to see my BOYYYYY!”) worse by exaggerating Every. Single. Line.

On the other hand, this episode featured some of the best use of continuity in the season, and it also makes excellent use of all the other characters on the show. But Charlie still sucks. Because if there were a time when Charlie didn’t suck, then I’d actually want to buy season two on DVD.

We flashback to Michael’s renegade island-time in “3 minutes,” and we get to see Walt again for the first time since his creepy backward-dialogue stint near the middle of the season. We meet Miss Klugh (pronounced “clue”), and instantly becomes the creepiest Other on the show.

Elsewhere in real-time, Hurley and Kate brood over the deaths of Libby and Ana-Lucia, while Sawyer reveals to Jack that he slept with Ana-Lucia (though Sawyer eschews all subtlety when he lets Jack know this) and in one of the most poignant and interesting pieces of character development this season, Sawyer reveals to Jack that Jack is his only friend on the island. How cute.

IN OTHER DEVELOPMENTS…

• Charlie chucks the heroin-filled Virgin Mary statues into the ocean… when it was revealed last episode that heroin has important medical uses. Oops.

• A ship appears at the end of the episode! The Lostaways are saved! …. Unless it turns out to be Desmond. Remember, he came here to Craphole island on a boat.

• Apparently, Walt is being experimented on by the others. Can this explain his uncanny ability to astral-project himself? And summon polar bears to the island? And can we find out before, say, season four?

• Michael killed Ana-Lucia (RIP) and Libby (you will DEFINITELY be missed) in order to get Walt back from Miss creepy-as-hell Klugh. Which doesn’t make the killings right. Actually, pretty much nothing makes the killings right.

• Michael must bring Hurley, Jack, Kate and Sawyer to the others. What is their connection? Besides that these are (arguably) the four most important characters on the show, excluding Locke?

Rating: 3-and-a-half out of 5 minutes

“3 minutes” redeems the season after everything went to hell in last week’s episode. Not only do the characters actually interact and tell each other things in this episodes, but we finally get a sense of tension and mystery from the show in this week’s offering. Why do the others want Hurley, Jack, Kate and Sawyer? Let’s hope we find out in the 2-hour season finale next week. I for one definitely can’t wait.
