On a recent Saturday night their show was oversold-they opened horrible seating sections that were literally behind the stage-and over-hyped. The Allstate is a capable and suitable place for over-hyped acts and can occasionally host great shows. RBD failed to use its pop sensibilities to its advantage-with a very simple stage set-up and a clear-veil backdrop with a gray circular emblem of their fictional school and protruding runway. Hardly an extravagant show, although there was a treat for the audience, more on that later. The thing that RBD can clearly do, and do well, is pander to their youthful audience.
Anahí, an almost-too-thin blonde hard-body with glitter shinning on her body, at several points in the almost two-hour show would walk out on the runway and talk with the audience-in a mousy, nearly annoying manner. Her talks would range in anything from women empowerment-a great topic with the nearly all female and young audience-to love and happiness. She was not the only one to walk the runway. In between songs each member would take their turn, some would illicit louder screams and chants. The runway did have its fair share of use.
RBD's music is limited by the range of their singers. Their songs do not take risks and hardly challenge the vocal ranges of anyone, but, Anahí-which is not to say that she is the talented one. Of the three girls, the dark haired Maite had the best ability to cover not only her hi's and lo's but also stretch a bit beyond them and not sound poorly. It's a shame that for a large portion of the show she was back-up to Ducle and Anahí. Of the three guys, Alfonso was not only the most entertaining but also the most capable vocally.
RBD burned thru songs like “Rebelde” and “Una Cancíon” with ease and not much movement-another pop sensibility that lacked, there was hardly any dancing! There were two moments during the show which stood out. First, and a very blasphemous thing in my mind, when introducing the back-up band the Queen song “We Will Rock You” was lyrically altered to “Yo digo R. Tu dices B,D!” (“I say R. You say B, D!” for those of you that skipped Spanish class in high school) chanted over and over again. Sorry Freddie.
The second moment, and here is where the surprise comes into play, was during one the band's ballads. Sang by Anahí was the song “Sálvame” and in the background of the stage, Alfonso-her fictional soap opera love interest-could be seen gazing longingly at Anahí. The sequence was seemingly being filmed for the finale of the soap opera and it was one that ended with a kiss shared on the runway by the two after chants of “Beso, Beso, Beso” by the audience.
RBD is capable of shows beyond that which they put on at the Allstate. The talent of the group, individually and as a whole, is far that of which was seen. Their show lacked things like scenery and energy but it was a cohesive effort by all members. Their songs were well timed and their singing in unison was perfect. Their encore was short and was just a horrible way to set-up the singing of their current hit, “Nuestro Amor”. For all the good there was something equally bad. It was something of a mediocre show.
In a fictional place like a soap opera this semi-fictional band could do better, but in the all too real world like ours, they gave us their best. And their best was just below good.
