Ice Cube dominated the crowd even before any one laid eyes on him. Much like the mysterious Wizard of Oz behind the curtain, you could hear his powerful voice proclaim, “Chicago let's do this” and do it he did.

Delivering hits from his solo career to his time with the ground breaking N.W.A.; Cube had the crowd whipped into a frenzy even throwing out some fresh tracks just to prove the rapper cum actor was still in the game. Cube backed by DJ Crazy Toons and WC owned the House of Blues as all hands in the air sported the “W” sign for Westside Connection.
It's been some twenty years since he arrived on the scene with Easy-E and the boys and early on in his set he asked the crowed several times in a row one question, “Can I grow my geri curl back right on stage”? With a unanimous yes from the diverse crowd and one hell yes, Ice Cube laid down N.W.A. classics that started it all like it was the 80's all over again. The fans now with middle fingers in the air cheered and sung along during the once controversial, “Fuck tha Police”.
Ice Cube is one of those rare individuals who can smile at you and make you feel welcome one minute and then in a flash make you pray he spares your life with just one snarl. So are his gifts that have served him well both in the music world and of course in Hollywood. Much like fellow rapper Ice-T these days, it's more likely people know him more from his appearances in successful films like the Friday or Barbershop franchises. Still, first and fore most, Ice Cube has always been known as a rapper and working the stage like a true icon that he is, Cube spent the evening proving you should never count him out delivering 24 songs to the crowd.
After debuting some new tracks off his soon to be released seventh solo album, Laugh Now, Cry Later, including the first single “Why We Thugs”, Cube acknowledged, “I like the new shit but I loooooove the old shit”. Which in some ways states it all, Ice Cube has created many personas in his career and it's very possible that kids and their own parents can be fans of the diversity of his work. So it's without saying that while I like the new Ice Cube, I loooooooove the old Ice Cube! Powered by AkoComment 2.0! |
