When New Order opened their May 3 show with "Love Vigilantes," loyal fans packed into the Aragon Ballroom cheered. In "Vigilantes," vocalist Bernard Sumner sings of missing his wife and family, but we missed New Order during their 12-year absence from Chicago as well.

Their new album "Waiting for the Siren's Call" is downright melancholy compared to their classic club hits, but the band performed enough of old favorites to please the crowd.

Sumner rambled about being bitten by a shark while surfing in California in between sold renditions of new gems like "Krafty" and beloved dance tunes like "True Faith" and "Temptation."

Peter Hook even busted out some rock star moves as the crowd danced to songs that have become staples at '80s Nights in every major city in the world.

It was disappointing that the only songs played off of 2001's lively "Get Ready" were the hit single "Crystal" and the sappy "Run Wild." The energetic dance songs on that album blow away anything on "Siren's Call," which is full of typical mid-tempo New Order songs like "Hey Now What You Doing." The track contains almost laughable rhyming lyrics that include "You've got to hold your head up high/You know it's not too late to try." Such lines blend well into the background of an infectious dance beat, but in slower songs their silliness is more apparent.

Far more satisfying were renditions of the Joy Division songs "Atmosphere," "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Transmission," although many kids in the audience were still in the womb when Ian Curtis died.

Still no one could argue with the great fun of dancing to the final encore, "Blue Monday," the club hit that still stands the test of time. Hopefully New Order will gather some of the crowd's dancing energy and bring it with to their next studio effort.
