It may have been a rainy day in Chicago, but that didn’t seem to faze the 60,000 people cramming into Soldier Field Friday night. Everywhere you looked there were people of all ages mingling together, waiting anxiously and their good spirits paid off.

As the moment everyone was anticipating approached, the rain cleared up and the wind died down, making it a perfect Jovi summer night as the Bon Jovi "Have a Nice Day" tour stopped in the Windy City.

Earlier in the evening, the show kicked off with the local, Stellar Road. The band, whose members are from South Holland, Orland Park, Tinley Park and Chicago, won their spot on stage in a contest called Have A Nice Gig sponsored by Saturn and 101.9 WTMX The Mix. Stellar Road competed against five other bands on July 16th in the final round of the contest to get their spot.

At first, it seemed that Stellar Road didn’t have much of an audience, since a lot of the seats were empty but the party was inside for this band. Most people were inside the stadium, fighting for a spot right along the edge of the seating area so that they could see the band and still be out of the rain. Despite their view from afar, everyone seemed to enjoy their music and was having just as good of a time.

More people began braving the weather as Nickleback took the stage. After playing several of their hits, like “Photograph”, “How You Remind Me” and “Too Bad”, not only did the rain stop, but the seats began filling up. They put on a solid show, they sounded just as good live and were very energetic throughout their entire set. It was not only fun to watch them but also to watch the reactions of the crowd. Everyone seemed to really get into their performance, singing and dancing the entire time.

It didn’t matter how good of a show the openers were, tonight was still about the Jovi. Bon Jovi played song after song for over two hours, never stopping between songs. Jon Bon Jovi had the crowd on its feet for the entire set, while he danced his way from one side of the stage to the other. His energy level never fell and their high energy performance, mixed with songs like “Shot Through the Heart”, “Living on a Prayer”, “Runaway” and “Raise Your Hands”, made it hard to not get as lost into the music along with the band.

A major contributor to the atmosphere of the concert was the venue. I’ve seen concerts but none can compare to seeing a show in the football stadium of Soldier Field. The place itself is massive. Seeing a place that large packed full of people, all there with a common interest, makes the concert that much more exciting. I think that playing to a sold out venue that is as big as Soldier Field had the bands pumped up as well, making the performances much more intense.

No matter who the opener is or which venue, Bon Jovi is a must see concert. Even a small performance by this band could make someone an instant fan. You haven’t lived until you’ve gotten your Jovi on.
