Riding "The Subways" to the Start of Lollapalooza Print E-mail

While walking through downtown Chicago on our way to a dark alley for our photo shoot, The Subways – brothers Billy Lunn and Josh Morgan along with Lunn’s girlfriend Charlotte Cooper – show off their energy by jumping around, acting goofy, and simply just being fun kids preparing to open one of the largest stages on the Lollapalooza grounds. Soon though, as many music critics are predicting, this fun young band will instantly be thrown under the spotlight as one of the premiere bands in the world.

“My dream is to meet our biggest fan,” he laughs. “I meet tons of fans, but I really want to meet some maniacs, the fans who are just crazy for us.”

Both Morgan and Cooper are humbled by the whole fan experience, even though while walking in the middle of the sidewalk, no one stops the rockstars.

“We actually get noticed more in America,” Morgan says. “People approach me a lot more over here. I like that. I like chatting with them and I have no problem exchanging e-mail addresses with our fans. I have never ending chats with them and I love it. Any time someone says I love you guy it’s the most amazing experience. I just try to say thanks back.”

Cooper instantly agrees, jumping in and admitting she loves the connection with the fans. “I love meeting fans. We run the MySpace page ourselves. It’s a great way to keep in contact with people all over the world. Our fans are the one’s who allow us to do what we do.”

With a solid fan base overseas, The Subways are ready to take their careers to the next level by introducing more and more Americans to their energetic catchy tunes.

“We love coming over here,” Cooper says, as her and Morgan take a seat on the couches in the lobby of the Hard Rock Hotel. “The landscape, the people, the cities – everything is just mind blowing to us. We are very privileged to have the opportunity to travel over here and play music for our fans.”

The Subways will give Chicagoans and Lollapalooza concertgoers the chance to hear an hour long set at 12:30 a.m. today on the AT&T stage, one of the biggest stages on the Grant Park grounds, giving them a much bigger stage than the band’s first Chicago stage at the Empty Bottle.

“We are moving up,” Cooper says. “When you have the chance to play on the same bill as Kanye West and rock legends like Sonic Youth, you know you are going in the right direction. I so excited to play at Lollapalooza. I have heard so much about it and have read the stories.”

Even with all the excitement and the seemingly calmness of the band, Cooper admits she is a little nervous to play in front of such a large crowd.

“There might not be a ton of people out there, but I get nervous before every show,” she says. “Once we get out there though, we will be ready to go.”

Even though buzz is circling the band’s talent, The Subways still are not invincible just yet – mainly because they are not 21. Rather than going out and partying on their first real night in Chicago, the band was held hostage by the law and kept silenced away from Chicago’s great drinking spots.

“It’s like being a kid again,” Cooper laughs. “We can’t go out cause we are not 21. It’s weird because the drinking age is 18 in Europe.”

“We are not huge drinkers all the time,” Morgan laughs. “We just like a nice pint ever so often.”

“Yeah, a nice pint with our friends is nice,” Cooper says. “We need to try the college scene here and get us some fake IDs.”

Although they might not be the big rockstar partiers, Chicago should mark down The Subways as one of the bands to watch, as they are ready to rock not only Lollapalooza, but the world.
