Lollapalooza, the highly anticipated rock festival hosted by the city of Chicago is off to a good start. This year's show is bigger than ever, with an extended area of Grant Park open to fit eight stages and one extra day to accommodate 130 bands. The show has once again successfully attracted rock 'n' roll performers and fans from all over the country and the world, and has become a bash comparable with major rock festivals like Coachella and Austin City Limits.

Continuing Lolla coverage
Read Lumino Magazine's Lollapalooza coverage all this week! Interviews, concert reviews and more are on their way!

Friday afternoon started with the right set of bands to ensure an excellent progression through the evening. Up-and-coming the Subways rocked again at one of the main stages, while Aqualung gave us a nice show with a lot of interaction with the audience. They even included jokes in between their overly emotive songs.

We were also treated with local Chicago band The M's, Editors, capricious Ryan Adams and bold Lady Sovereign, only to close the night with Death Cab for Cutie and Ween, the headliners.

Even though it was another hot summer day in Chicago, temperatures managed to stay below 100, allowing liberating rockers and rockees to comfortably cool off with adult beverages without the fear of dehydratation. It seems to me, however, that the best party of the day was when the lovely Chicago afternoon sky darkened to night and we all could finally feel some of the refreshing breeze kicking in.

New Yorkers the Secret Machines deserve the Friday's spotlight not only for delivering a really memorable show, but for being able to gather the highest population of folks with piercing, tattoos and colorful died hair.

Jack's White astonishing new band the Raconteurs was another highlight of the day. The band put an hour of intense rock 'n' roll with powerful solo guitar by White that would make Jimmy Page jealous. Always on the edge, White also delighted fans as he led his quartet in a special cover of a hit from a major band scheduled to perform tomorrow - a bold move when the song is Gnarls Barkley's “Crazy”!

Last but not least, its proven again that the folky Violent Femmes continue to attract crowds - no matter how old their hits are.

The first day of Lollapalloza is over, and like me, thousands of rock 'n' roll fans have officially enjoyed the day and want to do it again. Lucky for us, we have Saturday and Sunday ahead of us. Stay tuned as Lumino covers Lollapalooza's highlights. I wouldn't want to miss Gnarls Barkley covering the White Stripes!
