ATMOSPHERE
Well there is definitely a bicycle motif going on in here, but form follows function as they have bike parking in the read and a rail out front for similar purposes. Inside it is a bar first, dimly lit with colorful accents. It's not loud in Handlebar by any means, but there is a comfortable din at most times.
CROWD
You'll find mostly fellow bike enthusiasts, but a healthy dose of vegans, hipsters, wicker park transplants, Bucktown spillovers will be there as well; making this one hip place to be. Everyone seems pretty friendly even though, the majority of people seem to be in groups of three or more.
SPIRITS
Aside from domestic taps (think miller light, Pabst, etc), they also have a full service bar and a great list of wines to choose from. Now, that brings us to the beers. They have some great ones, like delirium tremens and then they've got Schlitz. It's a great mix and you're sure to find something you like at a reasonable cost.
GRUB
Whatever you do, DO NOT PANIC! There is no meat (other than fish) on the menu. It's okay though! You'll find something tasty, I promise! While the menu at Handlebar may not be very extensive, it is comprehensive. Including soups, salads, sandwiches, entrees, and desserts. On top of that, they have rotating specials. So it is guaranteed that there is something you will like. I have enjoyed the grilled tofu sandwich, Chili-Cheese Fries, Fish tacos, and the best damn mashed potatoes on the block.
PRICES
Moderate prices ad to the appeal of this place, making it easy to find a tasty meal at bar that won't leave your arteries begging for a break. Dishes range from around 5-13 dollars depending on how fancy you get. Add a $2 Schlitz to that or a 1.50 PBR on Mondays and you've got a meal for under 10 bucks.
WHY IT'S UNIQUE
A great atmosphere that mixes the vegetarian diet with a bar themed for bicyclists, it doesn't get much better than that, plus you won't find something like this in the 'burbs, a place like Handlebar is the reason you live in this city. Check it out!
