The Secret Machines dared to jump on stage totally dressed in black regardless of the intensity of the Chicago summer sun directly attacking the Q1O1 stage on a late Friday afternoon. Introduced with a reminder that the evening had only just begun as we had several more hours of musical acts to see and pick from 9 stages. Yet, it was a relief for us and certainly for the band that we could finally feel a refreshing breeze in the air coming off the lake to help us enjoy their hour long set.

Stage Q1O1
Lollapalooza

Sharing Friday's edgy time slot fans had to make a decision to spend it here or with Lady Sovereign or Iron & Wine as their schedules overlapped. The Q101 stage was surrounded by enough loyal fans who exhibited not only exotic body art and hair colors but provocative dressing styles and attitude that displayed the diversity of their fan base and the Lollapalooza crowd in general. Even though one felt you were living and literally breathing California, the Secret Machines have no connection to Californian as the trio was actually formed in Texas in the mid-2000, and has now adopted New York as their hometown.

The show started with “Alone, Jealous and Stoned” and continued on with the new tunes from their second album “Ten Silver Drops” just released this year. Stand outs were “Daddy is in the Doldrums” a lengthy eight minute tune (that felt like fifteen) which displayed somewhat haunting vocals, pounding drums and a great U2-like guitar riffs towards of the end of the song. Next up was ”Sad and Lonely” as most of the crowd that were having their first exposure to the band (including me) were now disarmed and grooving to the music.

Overall, the Secret Machines were fun to watch and dance. Even though the band seems to have included a little bit of everything from U2, Led Zeppelin and Depeche Mode into their songs, they sounded pretty great and the audience never seemed to complain even for a hot Friday afternoon at Lollapalooza.

While the machines do not reveal their secret, I will continue to be in between their eclectic audience trying to sleuth out this information. If you liked them as much as I did, it was also announced at Lolla that the band is back to Chicago in October for a show at Park West.
