The bay area act, Lyrics Born, has a style that defies what Billboard Magazine reports as hip-hop. Instead of a harder sound, or searching for an edgier appeal, Lyrics kept true to his roots of soul, and funk, keeping the music light, and getting you in the mood to have a good time.

Taking his time to get to the stage in what seemed like forever in sound checks, the crowd grew somewhat impatience as the difficulties over the last day and half started to really get annoying. But after it was all said and done, the band, yes a hip hop band took the stage, and then proceeded for the next 60 minutes, of rocking out the crowd.
Launching into notable hits, some a little bit older, and what sounded like some new material, had the crowd dancing all through their set. Lyrics Born’s particular dose of music went over very well with everyone. Combining a funk based bass line, a boom bap drum pattern, and some Latin infused guitar over it, laid the perfect bed of sound for his voice to soar over. Popping in and out through the music, delivering punch lines like mash potatoes in a lunch line, Lyrics Born proves that even I summer heat, even when slapping the face of mainstream rap, you can still have a good time.
Wildly entertaining, and exciting, its hard to see why they have not come further in the music industry, given their tireless work ethic, and unstoppable live show, incorporating a back up singer, keyboardist, drummer, guitarist, and a bass player into their live show, allowing for a complete artist audience interaction. While also giving the rapper, a whole other set of people to feed off of and get energy, and on a day like Saturday, you would defiantly need it.
While nothing happened out of this world for their show, they did keep it entertaining enough to want more. Plus, given their affiliation with Blackalicious, it won’t be surprising to see them on the same bill soon coming back through the Windy City. This is a group I would definitely recommend to see, and then to see again. Powered by AkoComment 2.0! |
