Kanye prevails despite sound issues Print E-mail

“TURN IT UP, TURN IT UP!” is what the crowd shouted over and over again in aggravation, because the sound during, Mr. West’s, performance was a whisper at best. Over the course of his one hour show, which I would guess, two thirds of the entire Lollapalooza audience showed up to watch, there were as many sound problems as guest appearances, which were quite a few. But, no one was more pissed off at this fact, than Kanye himself.

“Were going to have to change some things around, Mom” is what he spit into the microphone, to his mother standing on the side of the stage referring to his sound man’s inability to fix the issue that was bothering the paying crowd so much. And, judging by the look on the sound man’s face later that night at the, Hard Rock Hotel, where Kanye threw the after party, it didn’t seem like the pop star was taking his employees phone calls.

Anyways, as the saying goes, after the storm comes the sun, and it was a very bright night with all the stars that were on the stage. From GLC, who had a few guest appearances on Kanye’s first opus, The College Dropout. To, Lupe Fiasco, another MC from Chicago, who is now just gaining national exposure with his new single, Kick Push, and had a guest spot on, Touch the Sky, the latest single from, Late Registration, were decent enough to be on stage, but not scene stealers. Nothing ground breaking so far from these two, but I’d say watch Lupe, he seems to hold some promise.

While even though he had a few guest appearances, he carried the show on his own shoulders, tearing through his string of hits including, Gold Digger, complete with the spinning dance moves showcased in the music video, Through the Wire, which is about the car crash that changed his life, Jesus Walks, All Falls Down, and Kanye’s Workout Plan, only enlisting the help of GLC to cover Paul Wall’s verse on, Drive Slow.

Prowling the stage dressed in pastels with the number 1 placed all over his shirt, he did as they say in the sales industry, threw his wallet over the fence. By basically proclaiming his self as the best, he was forced to jump over the fence to prove he’s right. Even saying to the security guards, “How cruel is it, that you get to go to the Kanye West show, but you don’t get to even look at him?” So while he did do the required speech about following your dreams, the rest of his show did not follow a tired and true formula, instead showing a little spontaneity that added a tinge of uncertainty to his show.

So what could you really say about the man, that he hasn’t already said about himself? A musical genius, check. A tastemaker, check. An asshole, double check. But above all else, he is a man that truly loves his job, and that is inspiring in itself. Because, God, how I am sick of the self loathing that runs rampant through some music in today’s pop arena. But thankfully, Kanye is way to proud of himself to ever allow himself to get dragged down into the pits of depression over the weight of his own success.

So besides the sound defaults, Kanye delivered the goods again to ensure his place in the plethora of Chicago greats.
