30 Seconds to Mars: Unforgettable Print E-mail

Dressed in all white, almost looking like storm troopers, 30 Seconds to Mars, took the stage in a military march holding battle flags and, roses?? The heat though made the group lose the masks almost as soon as they took the stage, mid Sunday evening.

Q101 Stage
Lollapalooza

Not being one to fall short in his performances, it was pure fire and passion that flew through Jared’s voice that lifted the crowd to a higher state of being in this Lollapalooza. While I had never heard their music before, I turned into an instant fan, when Jared destroyed all notions in my head that this would be another band that an actor was a part to live out some high school fantasy. Whether it was his rock and roll stunts, ala Almost Famous’ most pulled quote, “I’m a golden god!” (but, he didn’t jump) or his dedication to rocking the crowd in the similar fashion, Blues Traveler, did later Sunday evening.

For whatever reason I think I found the new leaders of the pack in showman ship skills, Mars did so little to disappoint, that I think the only issue was the sound. Unfortunately, that was pretty prevalent throughout the festival. Note to Perry, if you’re going to spend big money to attract big talent, it does no good if the sound man is fresh out of his bedroom studio, and plunked into one of the most anticipated concerts this year. But all bitching aside, the heat was made into a distant memory when the first wails from the guitar hit my ears with a harsh melody that can only be described as, The Kill.

Mars continued their assault on our senses with their other hits, A beautiful lie, and Attack. They never let up or took a break, except to throw roses, and popsicle sticks into the crowd to cool everyone off. But the true cornerstone of this band is their live show. Climbing atop the light towers running up the stage, his true gangster came out when he commanded respect by pumping his fist while clinging on to the stiff steel shouting slogans of freedom, and following your own path in life.

Even more impressive was his stage diving so far into the crowd, the security guards could no longer hold onto his belt, clutching onto his microphone screaming “Fuck you!” to all the people who have tried to hold him back, and to all the people who try to hold us back from following our dreams.

Jared Leto is the rock star that we all want to be, or at least hang out with, and I feel at least somewhat fortunate that I saw him display what a truly reckless person is able to achieve. Over the course the show, he declared that he would never forget that day as long as he lived, I have feeling neither will those that saw them play.

Revisiting this article, I have to say you are right. I haven't forgotten that performance months later. They made a convert of me.
