Milwaukee’s own three-piece the Violent Femmes are back once again gracing the stage at Lollapalooza. As part of the mega-festival touring lineup back in its origins in 1991, the Femmes shared the spotlight with Perry Farrell’s own Jane's Addiction and even Siouxsie and the Banshees. Back then they were certainly younger and at the height of their fame, but they have managed through the years to acquire a very loyal fan base who seems to be present and accounted for on Friday at Grant Park.

Even though their popularity has been kept just below the radar screen during their lengthy career, the Femmes are probably among the very few bands that can be defined as a successful merger of folk and indie rock. The band is venerated for expressing the adolescence anxiety and awkwardness with songs of catchy rhythms and lyrics.

Formed in Milwaukee in the early 80’s, the band seems to have been through a period of reclusion from the music scene in recent years. However, after Gnarls Barkley this year covered their hit “Gone Daddy Gone” one may wonder if this is the opportunity for a revival that most of their fans have probably been hoping and waiting for in the past few years.

Playing for an obvious loyal crowd as the sun slowly went down behind the Chicago skyline on a Friday night, the Femmes delivered a concert following their traditional setup: The stage was packed with an eclectic list of special guests, in particular were the punk cabaret two-piece band the Dresden Dolls who could be seen contributing in the background behind Femmes’ singer, Gordon Gano; along with a few other musicians to help fill out their full live sound. As always the Femmes made use of many exotics musical instruments which at this show included a xylophone, a washboard and wooden drums.

The band delivered a satisfing helping of tunes from their must-play top hits including “Blister in the Sun”, "Add it Up" and later hit “American Music” as the devoted danced the night away. With the amount of smiles emanating from the dancing and bopping audience, one wouldn’t be surprised if they are brought back to Lollapalooza again next year so let’s hear it for the Femmes and lets in particularly hear it for American Music.
