Dresden Dolls offer flash, not music Print E-mail

When the highlight of your show as a musician, is flashing your b-cups, it's not a good look. The Dresden Dolls took to one of larger stages of Lollapalooza, and proceeded to attempt to rock out as a piano player, and a drummer. It's like Primus, but not.

Nothing in real particular stuck out, except the aforementioned and their facial makeup. So, I don't know if Lollapalooza also substituted for a costume party, because clowns were in full effect all weekend, so that even the Dresden Dolls, fell mercy to this trend.

With their faces made up to look like clowns, Amanda Palmer (vocals, piano), and Brian Viglione (drums) sang their one decent song in my opinion, Operated Boy, and it seemed as if it would never end. But, then the highlight happened.Amanda in all her glory, brought down the house and the camera lenses to her perky b-cups for the world to see. If that's the new way to connect with your audience, when is Christina Aguilera coming into town?

Hell, there was more excitement surrounding the stage light, than Amanda's lackluster piano playing. From the daises projected on the back wall, to the mostly green backdrop that mirrored the eye color of the band perfectly, the stage could've been the star of the show. But besides that, I really cannot endorse anything else from their performance. Their music to me sounded as if you took the wax record of the, Oompa Loompa song from the, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" movie, and then spun it backwards.

Maybe I'm being too hard on them. It was hot, and in that type of heat, sometimes you think funny. Sometimes you think erratically. Sometimes you just make stupid decisions, like having no rhythm section, or any section for that matter besides percussion. Or, maybe I just hate the piano, Common couldn't cut it either. It's a little outdated to me I suppose. But, when you have more lighting techs, camera men, and roadies visible on the stage, than the band they're trying their hardest to make look cool, it just doesn't cut it. So, I'm sorry, because while they may have had a crowd, they didn't have a fan who wrote reviews.
