Murphy crowd feels the love Print E-mail

An enchanting crowd of elegantly attired audience members were submerged into the romantically dark realm that is Peter Murphy. Murphy, who unabashedly proclaimed onstage that he's not afraid of Americans, is in the midst of touring the States in support of his current release, "Unshattered."

Love has always been a major player in Murphy’s musical lexicon as well as images of water. We must remember that water is the basis of all life and Love is a feeling of intense desire and attraction. Both of these were present in the eyes, ears and hearts of a sold out crowd at Chicago’s Metro in what was a most enchanting show.

Leading off with “Gilding like a Whale” we sailed along with the deep voice that weakens knees and stirs desires. Then continuing on with an onslaught of new material Murphy commented that that band (Mark Gemini Thwaite – Guitar, Jeff Schartoff – Bass, Justin Benette – Drums) was only two weeks old, but it seemed like they’ve been plying for five years. Proving his point he launched into a rock bottom version of “Deep Ocean, Vast Sea”, much to the delight of fans. He then brought back Sarah Fimm (his opening act on this tour) to the stage to sing a duet of “Huuvola” which made the audience swoon.

One of the audience members commented to me that, “Do you realized that all of the women, and most of the men in the audience, would marry him in a second.” A strange kind of love seemed to permeate the crowd. No one was immune. Murphy took three encores, each with variant energies levels and performance styles. The fist encore had Murphy playing acoustic guitar in “Marlene Dietrich's Favourite Poem”, and then continuing down the deep path in playing “Cut’s you up.”

Murphy’s voice is the life giving water that had several audience members traveling hundreds of miles to intake. A passionate crowd was refreshed by the show. And as another member of the audience said. “To see him is truly a deeply passionate experience.”
