The Shins are a staple on my Sunday afternoon playlist, so it made perfect sense to see them perform just as the humidity started to cool off and the fans began to wind down on the last day of Lollapalooza.

I was surprised to see the crowds crush in an entire hour before The Shins were to start- I had expected the band to get lost in the shuffle of some of Lolla's larger, bigger-name acts. But as I looked around me at the extremely diverse audience- old and young, conservative and…much less so - I began to realize just how wide the loyal fan base of the much loved band actually was.
And The Shins did not disappoint. Dressed in identical army green shirts and dark pants, the band continued to play with the audience and generally have a good time while onstage. They joked around with each other while tinkering with their instruments before playing new songs, and they tossed beach balls back and forth between themselves and the audience.
The performance, if not surprising, was at least even keel and pleasing. The Shins featured mostly well-known tracks from “Oh, Inverted World” and “Know Your Onion.” They also played about four tracks that will be featured on their new album. And if audience participation and head-bobbing is any clue as to the quality of those songs, I think it's safe to say that the new album will do well. Among loyal fans, at least.
