“This day has been a little mind blowing and humbling at the same time,” says bassist Jason Angelilli as he scans the Lollapalooza grounds. “This is the day we had to play, so we would have liked to party a bit more, but we have to stay focused. Tonight will be mind blowing and tomorrow will be mind blowing, but when we have to play we definitely have to stay on.”
Over the last year, the Musical Outfits have built a solid fan base thanks to many performances around Chicago, including a residence stay at Wise Fools Pub, but even with kudos from music critics and packed Chicago venues, the band remains unsigned. However, the Musical Outfits remain optimistic that can change thanks to the momentum of their Lollapalooza gig.
“Even if this even was in Nashville or somewhere else, it would be an honor to play,” Angelilli says. “Especially for our fans to be able to see us and Gnarls Barkley on the same day without paying more, it's really cool for them. I was impressed with the amount of people I didn't know who showed up to see us.”
Lead guitarist Jimmy Giannopoulus was excited to see a large fan base at the Musical Outfits early set.
“It's always nice to see a whole new swarm of people,” he says. “After each song was done, the applause got louder and louder as we went.”
Some moments can stick with people for a long time, for the Musical Outfits, they will never forget the day they got asked to contribute to Lollapalooza.
“I remember actually what I was doing when we found out,” Angelilli says.
“Where were you when they shot JFK?” Giannopoulus quickly asks.
“Ha, I was actually at a Chicago White Sox game and I was coming down the ramp when I got a call from Jimmy,” Angelilli says.
“Right here baby,” Giannopoulus laughs.
“And he said we are playing Lollapalooza. And I was walking with all these people and I started screaming, 'WE ARE PLAYING LOLLAPALOOZA.' We were very excited because the genre of music we grew up with was the grunge alternative like Pearl Jam and Sound Garden, and last year I came and saw the bands and right away we said we wanted to play next year. And here we are.”
For Giannopoulus, he just hopes it lasts.
“I certainly hope this lasts and we can build off of our Lollapalooza gig,” he says. “As long as the festival is here, we hope to play it. And every band hopes to get bigger and bigger, I would definitely hope so. Right now we are unsigned, and of course it seems like it's baby steps but baby steps at a fast pace. “
“When you are from Chicago, it's not like being from the Northeast when you can go to Boston, Philly, New York in the same week. Here we can go to all the colleges and have fun. When you are unsigned, it becomes a lot more difficult. It's tough though. It's hard. We make music our top priority and it's tough to keep up,” Giannopoulus says.
The work load for the Musical Outfits has just begun. They will now try to build from the momentum of Lollapalooza and try to gain enough recognition to sign a record deal in the coming months. If you asked their fans, confusion would be a good word to describe why this Chicago band isn't signed. If you asked me, I would agree.
