This year, the band has built a little bigger fan base and is one of one a handful of bands selected to make their second straight Lollapalooza visit. Lumino Magazine sat down with the foursome for an interview before the band left the grounds headed for Sweden before recording their sophomore album on Capitol Records.
Lumino: It's been a year since we last talked, what's going on these days, now that you are a little older and wiser.
Andrew Langer, 20-year-old guitarist: We are just excited to get our new album out. It has been some time since our last one and we are thrilled to get back out there and record another album.
Logan Baren, 22-year-old guitarist and vocalist: And that will come out early next year.
Ben Greenon, 21-year-old drummer: Yeah, it's about time.
Lumino: When you look out at the crowd and see a sea of Redwalls fans, are you pumped to be back home?
Logan Baren: It's good to have support from back home.
Justin Baren, 20-year-old bassist: This isn't just about Chicago, it's about people from all over. Any time we play Chicago we want to do a great job. It's out city and it's our town.
Greenon: It's always a blast to be back and play in front of our home town.
Lumino: This is your second straight year performing at Lolla, how cool is that?
Logan Baren: Yeah two years in a row. That's pretty unheard of.
Langer: Can you imagine that.
Logan Baren: I guess they ran out of other artists.
Lumino: You should have asked for a greater percentage of tickets.
Logan Baren: We did actually.
Justin Baren: We get half the cover charges.
Lumino: What's after this for you guys?
Justin Baren: We are going to Sweden on Sept. 11 and starting our new record. We are excited to get back in the album and start putting together some more music. It has definitely been way too long.
Lumino: You guys must be pretty pumped to have earned enough praise to make it to your second album, but flying on Sept. 11, are you a little scared?
Langer: We are excited. I don't want to blame it all on September 11th. It's just a day. It's great, I am just excited to get our new material out. As a musician you are always itching to get more material out.
Lumino: What's your gut feeling, are things going the way you dreamed?
Logan Baren: I think so. It's nice and easy. It's really awesome the way things are right now. Things are sort of just happening.
Lumino: You are building solid momentum.
Greeno: We haven't really been touring this year, so, hopefully next year will be a fresh start.
Lumino: So tell me about the new album.
Langer: It's definitely better than the last record. It has a lot different songs and explores other genres of music. It definitely has more of a variety than the last album.
Greenon: It will be good.
Lumino: Is it tough to put out a sophomore album?
Justin Baren: We haven't recorded any of it yet, but we have been writing for the last six months. We have the material ready to go, it's just a matter of getting into the studio and putting it all together.
Lumino: How's Capitol Records? Have they pressured you guys to make the next album at all?
Justin Baren: They are great. They are good to us.
Lumino: You hear about labels pressuring artists to put out the next album, none of that?
Logan Baren: Don't blame the label, blame the band.
Langer: But for most people…
Logan Baren: Blame the label.
Lumino: Have you guys been here whole weekend?
Logon Baren: We had some things that we had to do. Today is our first day here. I wish I could have seen some other bands cause this is our home.
Langer: The only day we get to come and see bands, we have to do all these interviews.
Lumino: Well, don't blame me for liking you guys.
Logan Baren: Ha, asshole.
Lumino: Ha, hey, I promise great press and it will help you outsell the next album.
Logan Baren: Yeah, we know how it works.
Langer: Yeah, we have heard that all before.
Justin Baren: No, no, we appreciate it.
Lumino: Are you guys going to see another tonight?
Logan Baren: Wilco and 30 Seconds to Mars. I want to see a little of both.
Lumino: If you could have seen other bands, which ones?
Justin Baren: Kanye and The Raconteurs.
Langer: I'm so angry right now. If I saw the schedule I would be crying right now.
Justin Baren: I just kind of want to walk around and really dig the music. I want to have the chance to see some bands I wouldn't normally see.
Lumino: And since you guys have gotten bigger, how have the ladies been last year?
Greeno: The ladies are so nice.
Lumino: I love ladies too, I'll take leftovers.
Justin Baren: Alright, alright. We will have to set our guy up.
