ATMOSPHERE
While at first glance, the kitsch factor immediately screams “TGI Friday’s” you’ll quickly notice that all of the stuff is actually from Chicago and a lot of it is old brewery stuff. I love the Chicago Neighborhoods map around near the bathroom doors, it reminds us that goose island is really from this hood. Visually, the bar is set up in a classic square, so the bar room has visibility from all sides. Dark, rich woods remind you that this is a pub while the large glass windows reveal the heart of the brewery. It always smells soo damn good in this place, like home cooking and beer, so you will definitely want to hang out for a while.
CROWD
This is definitely a bar that you could take Grandma and Grandpa to, just watch out when Nana gets a couple pints in her. Ages range from very young to very old, with most being 25-42. The restaurant portion also caters to families so don’t be surprised to see kids on the side away from the bar. Overall, patrons seem really relaxed and tend be more of the preppy casual type.
ENTERTAINMENT AND EVENTS
Brewery tours every Sunday at 5 PM are only 5 bucks for an hour and a half tour! Plus Goose Island offers their “M.B.A” program (Master of Beer Appreciation) is an intensive sampling course of 42 + different beers with free 64 oz bottles after 10, 20, and 30 credits are reached. For more info, check out the website.
SPIRITS
The Business is beer and Goose Island is probably the best of the local breweries, running neck and neck with the smaller Piece Brewery down the street on North Ave and Wolcott. I’m sure they have hard liquor, but who would need it when you can get so much good beer!? Pay attention to daily beer specials, seasonal brews, and Beer of the month promos.
GRUB
Ranging from standard pub style comfort food, to the very tasty, yet refined choices like salads and grilled fish; the fare here is all good. The appetizers are massive and perfect for a night of drinking and snacking with friends. For dinner, entrees come with plenty of sides and the menu also recommends “Beer Buddies” for brews that might compliment your meal nicely. 4 stars all around!!
PRICES
With all they have to offer, you’d think the prices would be high but they’re not at all! Enjoy dinner for two, with drinks for under 65 and that ain’t bad. Average entrée price is about $11 and sandwiches run about $9.
WHY IT'S UNIQUE
Goose Island is a great place to bring friends and not have to search hours for parking, plus the beer alone is worth the trip. Bring friends, bring family, be happy.
