There is really no security, which left the "closed" balcony open for the taking. From upstairs there is a grand view of a once immaculate theatre, now reduced to a sloppy venue with liquor and blood stains sunk deep into the hard-wood flooring. A moon-faced kid with more metal in his face then on my 87' Oldsmobile steps forward for direction on where to smoke. In a seemingly senseless move The Congress only allows cigarette enjoyment in the main entrance, and hallway outside the actual theatre. From the smoking area you could hear the screeching mess of untalented generic Metal pumping from the stage. The ill vibrations and sideways glances from mascara soaked teenage eyes created just the kind of tension you would expect from an angst filled metal show.
There are five bands in five hours and most of which, absolutely terrible. The only ones worth mentioning are "Bleeding Through" and unexpected surprise "Terror". After sitting through uncomplicated metal riffs for much of the evening, it was quite the blessing to hear "Terror" and the attitude they brought to the stage. Complexity in song-writing is not something prevalent in today's metal yet "Terror" is going to make that change. These guys are good at what they do, and are positively on the upswing of a Metal-core career.
"Bleeding Through" followed with a short set that gave a false hope that the closing band would actually contain talent.
Unearth takes the stage with several elevated platforms for the drummer and remaining members. Extremely irritating lights blind, as you attempt to avoid having the back of your head smashed in by tiny-teens with wolverine reflexes. Some twin drooling ogre's mow down what's left of the crowd on the side of the stage, and the band cheers on its angst-filled young by endorsing a huge donut of drunken violence in the center of the floor. The wind caused by these sweaty shirtless masses running in circles is the opposite of the axe-effect. There are hazy memories of the singer belting out something like "This is a war, and we are all in the trenches!!" Besides that, the Unearth lyrics are virtually nonexistent due to the singer screaming with a microphone practically down his throat. The guitar was mediocre at best. The one memorable thing was the throbbing bass, and pounding war drums that propelled everyone further into a psychotic rage. But what do I know the kids seem to dig it. There were of course a couple casualties of the aforementioned "war" a guy with a gushing broken nose in the bathroom, and a gorgeous teen dream with a tooth smashed out by the bar.
In short, this just wasn’t my scene. But if it’s yours, focus on "Bleeding Through", and whatever "Terror" puts out in the future. They have unlimited metal potential to make the dark lords smile.
