How many times have you heard the line: I don’t like country—except for Rascal Flats or Tim McGraw. Well it’s time that pseudo-country fans added a new name to that set of exceptions: Pat Green.

Green, 34, is a Bruce Springsteen sounding Texan with vocal talent, tons of energy and song writing capabilities from the tip of his Stetson to the sole of his steel tipped boot.

After years of cultivating a loyal and somewhat obsessive fan base in his home state, Green has just released his first album under Nashville powerhouse BNA Recordings. The album, titled Cannonball, will mark a major career switch for Green who got his start playing local bars and college parties throughout Texas. When most country singer/songwriters would have driven their pick-up trucks straight to Nashville, Green’s unique and grassroots approach to notoriety in Texas makes one hell of a music industry case study. Green had sold over 200,000 records before ever joining a major-label and he had Texans screaming “Pat F***ING Green” nearly a decade ago when the rest of America was still digging on the not nearly as cool Leanne Rimes. Two songs off Cannonball “Feels Just Like It Should” and “Way Back Texas” are already making quick work out of the country charts. Green co-wrote eight of the 14 tracks on Cannonball and “Feels Just Like It Should” hit 80 on the most recent Billboard Hot 100.

Recently at the end of August, Pat Green played two sold out shows at Joe’s Bar on Weed Street. Not a bad turnout for a venue situated in a sea of city dwellers. Throughout the concert, the crowd screamed the signature “Pat F***ing Green” and sobriety was a dirty word amidst this fun country loving crowd. Although Green’s vocal ability and sheer talent transfers naturally from the studio cuts to the live show, the ‘cool factor’ took a plunge during the live performance.

Green’s got the right attitude, heartland rock sound and the energy, but the stage presence lacks the certain command of the top tier pop and country stars. To give him the final edge to garner the exposure given to the Tim McGraw’s and the Rascal Flats,’ Green needs polish and more pizzazz during his concerts. We’re not expecting Green to be a Justin Timberlake and throw out more dance moves than the Radio City Rockettes, but sadly, everyone knows that talent is not the only prerequisite for selling concert tickets these days (ask Britney Spears.) Lights, sounds, wardrobe, pyrotechnics, attitude, a few girls on stripper poles, and more showmanship will ‘Cannonball’ Green into the national mainstream his talent deserves.

Already opening for the likes of Dave Matthews and having Matchbox Twenty’s Rob Thomas co-write his 2005 country hit Babydoll, Green is bringing ‘cool’ back into country and tempting music lovers nationwide who had previously sworn off the twang.
