From the start, the band and the crowd's energy rarely flagged. Keyboardist Barry Westhead delivered a reverb-heavy piano intro into "Counterfeit," as stickman Ben Byrne's shuffling drum rhythm and lead singer James Walsh's haunting arpeggio guitar licks drove along the tune off the band's breakthrough debut album, "Love Is Here." Walsh bounced up and down and stabbed at his acoustic guitar as he strummed the jangling, brilliantly biting "Poor Misguided Fool" (sample lyric: "When you need a foe/I will be there"); the crowd-pleasing "Alcoholic" showed Walsh's melancholy vocals were at their most Richard Ashcroft-like.
After mentioning the thrill of opening for some of the Rolling Stones dates, Walsh launched into an acoustic version of "You Can't Always Get What You Want," playing the first few verses before the rest of the band joined the party. Although an obvious tune the boys still managed to make it their own.
Later in the set, the crowd clapped along with Walsh's funky guitar during "4 To the Floor," off their sophomore album "Silence Is Easy," and followed up with a quasi-ska version of the song that jammed for several minutes as the crowd danced and cheered along.
Next up came “Tie Up My Hands” & “Good Souls” from their debut with “Keep Us Together” in between to help keep the set current. In fact, tonight’s set was well rounded and had an equal balance from all three albums.
The band closed the people-pleasing night with an encore of "Silence is Easy," the title track off their sophomore album. For a band known for their melancholy, cynical lyrics, Starsailor definitely left their fans in a good mood at the end of the evening and craving for more.
