Yes!! Snow Patrol’s lead singer Gary Lightbody, now healed from vocal issues, finally played Chicago after having to reschedule their show from last June. Lightbody sporting an Illinois T-shirt, along with the rest of the band performed to a packed Riviera and delivered an amazing show blended with a great dose of interaction with the crowd.

The Irish quintet’ star is still up and rising. After the highly successful 2004 studio album “Final Straw”, they are now proving they can go beyond the one-album-wonder gem. The band is now touring the USA to promote their just released 4th studio album “Open Eyes”, which includes the beautiful but super popular love song ”Chasing Cars” (If you haven’t listened to it yet, turn on the radio or download it).
Playing for an infatuated audience mostly comprised by mid-twenties college kids, the band started the evening slowly with the in pop tone of “Spitting Games”. In a well deserved two-hour set, they played almost all of their last two studio albums in full including favorites like “Run” ,“Chocolate” and “Make this Go On Forever”. In spite of the pop melancholy and hint of affection which characterizes the band, Snow Patrol definitely has great catchy tunes that are quite likeable even for first time listeners.
Snow Patrol does get bonus points for showmanship, Lightbody was by no means shy in interacting with the crowd, and did go beyond what most bands would to keep his audience well entertained. As if his strong Irish accent wasn’t enough to call attention, he also showed off quite unique dance moves, cracked several jokes and teased college football fans. They capped the evening with the very U2 like songs, “Open your Eyes” and “Hands Open”, which has lyrics that seem to have been written for us (“Chicago bursts to life and your sweet smile remembers you, my hands open” – you can imagine the cheering from the crowd at this point), only to end the show with Lightbody theatrically strangling himself with the microphone.
It was a great performance and very well appreciated by the crowds who have been obviously waiting impatiently for this concert since June. As for myself, I ended-up purchasing both of their last albums in the next day, and have added myself to the crowd that is now waiting for their next return to Chi-town. |
