It was revealed two episodes ago that the Others have a connection to the outside world, but nothing interesting has happened with that yet. We find out at the end of this episode that all the action that has taken place so far this season has been on an island completely separate from the Lostaway's island, but it makes so very little sense in the context of the rest of the season that an otherwise cool reveal becomes dreadfully insignificant.
But I shouldn't be surprised at the snail's pace these first episodes are moving at - this isn't any slower or faster than most of the second half of season two. It just helps illuminate how extremely good the “Lost” writers are at slowly (and I mean slowly) revealing the plot's secrets so that the show can go on almost indefinitely.
I just wish that episodes such as “Every Man for Himself” could benefit from such dedication from the show's writing staff. It's hard to remember what actually happened in this episode. That woman Colleen died. Sawyer was fake!injected with a pacemaker. Then Sawyer got beat up lots and lots. There was a cute bunny for a while.
Oh, there was one extremely interesting plot development from this episode, and it came in the form of Desmond, who almost definitely is having flashes of the future. This is an ingenious twist - bringing back some of the fantasy elements into the show that left when Walt did - though I would have preferred to see an already established character with very, very little to do in the show right now be given precognitive powers. Such as, perhaps, Claire? Sayid? Jin? Charlie? No, not Charlie, because he's wicked lame… Hurley? No, he has his own mystical-power thing happening (his connection to the numbers), though I can't remember the last time it actually came up.
I say we give Desmond 150 percent more screen time, kill off Charlie of course, hook Claire up with Jack because she may or may not be his half-sister and that would create some interesting dramatic tension, and then, of course, bring back the Lost monster and put him in the main credits. I miss my pretty little smoke-vision-showy-monster thing.
IN OTHER DEVELOPMENTS…
• A very interesting sequence of events for Sun. I figured they would leave her character alone for awhile because of the pregnancy storyline, but this whole oh-my-god-I-murdered-someone storyline is extremely interesting. As long as they actually acknowledge this happens next time we see Sun.
• Also, great job again from the “Lost” writers for keeping the real-time dramatic tension rolling by splitting up all the characters into separate plotlines.
New unresolved major plot-lines from "Every Man for Himself:"
1. Does Kate “love” Sawyer? Wait, why do I care?
Probability of mystery being resolved this season: Low-ish
2. Desmond is precognitive! What the hell?!
Resolution probability: Medium
3. Sawyer has a daughter?
Resolution probability: Low
4. Holdover from last year: What was up with that four-toed statue? No, “Lost” writers, I'm not going to forget this one.
Probability of this being solved this season: Low
Rating: 4 out of 5 lighting-conducting golf clubs
OK, I'll admit, this episode was very fun to watch - even if the writing wasn't up to par and the flashbacks were uber-lame. I've been enjoying “Lost” very much this season, thanks in part to the new locales and the emphasis on action/romance, I think.
