Poundstone entertains young, old Print E-mail

Paula Poundstone, female comedian extraordinaire, performed three sold-out shows in various outlying areas of Chicago this February. One of the shows was in Crystal Lake at the Raue Center for the Arts, a beautiful theater designed in an old-west/Mexican theme, complete with shining stars on the ceiling. Poundstone talked mainly about her life, as has been her habit most of her career, because it’s a topic that works well for her.

Wearing her characteristic suit and tie, Poundstone spent a majority of the first half of the show discussing current events, such as the Jet Blue scandal. As she’s done for many years, Poundstone interacted with the audience many times. Her candor and quick wit allow her to do so more often than other comedians who may get stuck without a response to audience comment. Poundstone, however, always has a snappy comeback to respond to whatever anyone says to her. Her humorous discussion of Crystal Lake captured the locals’ attention and made them like her immediately.

The audience at her Crystal Lake performance leaned towards the older side, many of the attendees being of retirement age. Poundstone, of course, made note of that fact just before the intermission, which was there, she said, because the older age of the audience made it necessary. Whispering absurdly into the microphone, Poundstone commented “I don’t think I’m supposed to tell you that,” an obvious indicator of her dry and quirky style.

The second half of her show was devoted to talking about her children, and of course, her cats. When she ran out of things to say, she looked to the audience for more material. She also commented that she has a problem with talking and would be talking anyway, whether someone was there to listen to her or not. As many people know, Poundstone was involved in a child abuse scandal a few years prior to this performance. She didn’t say much about it, other than wryly commenting that she was happy to know the audience would come to see a “felon and single mother of three.”

The audience at her Crystal Lake performance enjoyed evidently enjoyed themselves. Poundstone speaks intelligently and cusses only when absolutely necessary. Her humor never seems to be dirty or tasteless, and her topics appeal to people of all ages.

She made an excellent impression on those that hadn’t seen her before and she did not disappoint her loyal fans. Poundstone has recently published a book, titled “There’s Nothing In This Book That I Meant To Say,” which she sold and signed copies of post show. Unfortunately, those that couldn’t afford a copy of the book were left at the end of the line when it came to meeting Poundstone, but after such a good show, meeting her would only be icing on the cake.
