Paul Stanley, the star-faced guitarist of Kiss, wasted not a second of his time on the House of Blues stage, immediately electrifying the audience with his entrance. Needing no pyrotechnics or any other stage tricks, Stanley’s intense eyes and seasoned stage presence captivated everyone all on their own.

Dressed in a sheer leopard-print shirt, characteristically cut down to his navel, Stanley began the show with the title track from his new album Live To Win, with serious energy. In order to promote the album, the second of his solo efforts, the first of which was released in 1978, Stanley is touring seventeen cities in less than a month, backed by the house band from the Rockstar TV series, which Stanley fondly referred to as “my band.” Chicago was his eleventh scheduled stop on the tour and he made nothing less than a phenomenal impression.

Mixing old Kiss tunes in with his new and older solo works, Stanley exhibited an amazing stage presence, dancing throughout the entire show and showing zero signs of slowing down. The sound was muddy through the first four songs, making Stanley’s rock god voice hard to distinguish. Eventually though, the noise cleared up and the audience, comprised of college-age kids through people old enough to own the first Kiss album on vinyl, was treated to Stanley’s shiny, sexy voice, which, unlike many other singers’ from his era, reached every note we expected him to reach without fail.

For some artists, playing songs from their previously famous band on their own solo tours just doesn’t cut it (see Vince Neill of Motley Crue) but for Paul Stanley, it worked without a hitch. Playing for almost two hours, Stanley sang through “Lick It Up,” “Strutter,” “I Still Love You,” “Love Gun,” and others from his enormous repertoire, laughing and joking with the audience in between songs. He also threw in some rather obscure songs, like “Million To One,” and “Hide Your Heart,” both of which are rarely played. His three encores included “Lift,” “Detroit Rock City,” and “Goodbye,” a good mix of new solo, old solo, and Kiss. It was also a recording night, and the concert and fan antics will be made into a live DVD, complete with underdressed women holding roses in the front row, who were pre-chosen for the position. Perhaps real Paul Stanley fans would have made a better choice…

Never having toured for his first solo album, Paul Stanley really made up for it with this performance, and it was worth the nearly three-decade wait. He promised to return to Chicago for a future concert and we should only hope that he does. It’s amazing that, after so many years, this man seems not to have lost even a touch of his love for performing, and that’s to everyone’s benefit.

Why more people/critics don't see the talent is beyond me. Your review is right on target. Great show, no make-up or flashpots needed

And I totally agree-- what a great show. I was totally surprised and expecting it to suck (a la Vince Neil, etc.) but Paul, not only still has it...he brought it!

And what is his motivation? He has more money than God, and no need to tour the country in a bus...but thank god he did.

His band was hungry and obedient, and his vocals were right on.

Keep on keepin' on, Paul. And don't miss him next time, fans.
