Mini-season finale hits high mark for "Lost" Print E-mail

In an episode full of highlights - cult-hero Nathan Fillion from “Firefly” guest starring, a poignant death scene for Mr. Eko and Jack being an action star - the highlight must be the romantic spectacle of Kate and Sawyer.

"Lost" Episode 3.6: "I Do"

Original Air Date: Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006
When the creators of “Lost” promised action and romance for season three, they weren't lying. The story arc for the fall 2006 mini season of “Lost” concluded with “I Do” in the most spectacular episode of the series since the first delightfully tense first three episodes of season two.

What made for this episode's success? First of all, it was a Kate episode - and as you all know, I love me the series' Kate episodes. Second of all, the pacing, writing and directing were finally spot-on for the first time in ages. Every moment of the episode crackled and popped in only the way a well-written genre television series can.

Third, the flashbacks actually registered this episode, the first time since “The Glass Ballerina.” It was interesting that Kate's flashback in “I Do” regressed backward in her timeline before she was arrested, but not surprising, because there really couldn't be any way to give the character another flashback treatment.

Fourth was the steamy scenes between Kate and Sawyer, pre and post-coital. America got a little warmer Wednesday night.

Finally, the story arc of this mini-season led to “I Do's” success. This episode wouldn't have worked as well as it did if the groundwork wasn't laid as strategically as it was this season. Good planning and writing by the “Lost” writers.

IN OTHER DEVELOPMENTS…

• I don't think Charlie got any screen-time in this episode. Yes! Sadly, Claire didn't either. No!!!
• Speaking of missing cast members, it's weird that Sun and Jin only got to appear in one episode this season. Story-wise there wasn't much reason for them to show up, but it would have been nice.
• Nikki and Paulo had minimal screen-time. Boo.
• Yay! Danielle's daughter returned! Too bad I can't for the life of me remember her name.

New unresolved major plot-lines from "Lost," mini-season 2006:
1. Was Juliette lying in her cue-card video from the last episode?
Probability of mystery being resolved this season: High
2. Did Ben really have a tumor?
Resolution probability: Medium
3. Was the reason Mr. Eko died really because of his Jesus stick?
Resolution probability: Low-ish
4. The four-toed statue!!!
Resolution probability: Low
5. So, who is the father of Sun's baby?
Low-ish

Rating: 4 out of 5 Jesus sticks

The "Lost" writers have done a lot of good things so far in season three to redeem themselves, with good long-term planning and well-paced episodes. Can't wait for 2007!
