Brit-pop band Kasabian has finally made it back to Chicago after their all too brief performance at last year’s Lollapalooza and stints at both the Metro and Double Door. Now touring the US with the Danish indie-rock band MEW as opening act, Kasabian played an energetic sold out show at the Metro on a rainy Monday night.

Vocalist Tom Meighan, guitar player Sergio Pizzorno, bassist Chris Edwards and the recently recruited drummer Ian Matthews rocketed the UK charts with hits from their self-titled debut album released back in 2004, and are currently showcasing songs from their sophomore album “Empire” just released this past August.

Strangely named after Linda Kasabian, who was one of Charles Manson’s lovers and testified at his trial, the band is mostly known to blend electronica and rock and roll in a way that its musical results are powerful enough to get under your skin. Although some may argue that their sound is influenced from their fellow neighbors such as Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Primal Scream the vibe to this band is difficult to deny. Think Chemical Brothers if they were produced by Jimmy Page.

In spite of somewhat simple lyrics that in one way or another tend to address psychedelic trips such as “John was a scientist hooked on LDS”, to mention an obvious one, there is no need for ecstasy pills to enjoy Kasabian. Their confident stage presence, the readily likeable riffs and the additive beats seem to be enough to make you high all on its own.

By opening the show with their new single, “Shoot the runner”, Kasabian definitely set the tone for the evening as die hard fans packed right up to the stage and were jamming from the very first note. From then on it just got better with the high tempo “Reason in Treason”, “Cut Off” and the title track, “Empire”. They closed the night with their well know hits “Club Foot” and ‘LSF” leaving behind an excited audience cheering for an encore that never materialized.

Yes, unfortunately they played only 13 songs, which lasted for little over an hour, and again played no encore. Even though human beings don’t seem to be able to handle too much of a good thing without taking it for granted, the night would have had a happier ending if they had at least included my favorites “ID” and “U Boat”. Derivative or not it’s hard not to enjoy Kasabian’s beats and I am already looking forward to their next short appearance in the city. Short but always sweeeeeet!
