With the support of local radio, one wouldn’t be shocked to see a few hundred mosey into the House of Blues on a Sunday night to see radio favorite Mat Kearney. But many would be shocked to see a packed house with many unable to see the stage because of the jam packed venue.

Mat Kearney filled the house. Door to door and front of stage to back, fans packed the intimate venue hoping to experience Kearney before he breaks too big. Part of his cult following has to be thanks to the hit show “Grey’s Anatomy” featuring “All I Need”, which Kearney has no problem admitting. Yet, even with the break of big looming in his near future, Kearney remains mellow and true to himself.

“I’m just a musician, this is what I do,” he said in a pre set meeting with a few Chicago music publications in the House of Blues’ Foundation room. “I’m amazed by how many people have been turned onto my music after “Grey’s Anatomy” picked “All I Need” up.”

“Grey’s” may have pulled the fans into the door, but Kearney did the rest, rocking out to a full set and casually communicating with the crowd, thus adding a little more intimation to the night’s entertainment.

With radio hits filling his set list, including “Undeniable”, “Nothing Left to Lose”, and “Girl America”, the crowd was engaged throughout the entire set. My attention was officially hooked when Kearney played Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers “Learning to Fly” to near perfection. Had Petty been comfortably placed in one of the House of Blues’ luxurious opera boxes listening on, he too would have been impressed by the younger musician’s try at a historic masterpiece.

Artistically, Kearney’s song’s softness provides a platform for him to shine throughout the duration of his set, to which Kearney mastered on this particular Sunday night by exercising his fingers on the piano and scratching a peaceful lyric or two. If Kearney continues to build his fan base and catalog, packed houses, especially smaller venues, will be an every night, every day experience for the up and coming star.
