If you failed to catch Ray Charles in concert never fear you have one more chance. The just released “Ray Sings, Basie Swings” CD captures Ray Charles back in 1973 in fine form. This lost performance was found hidden in the archives and although his vocals were wonderfully preserved the rest of the recording was in poor quality.

"Ray Sings, Basie Swings"
(Concord Records)
Released October 3, 2006

Ray and the Count Basie Orchestra played together quite a lot through the years but for some reason never released a CD of their performance. Now thanks to modern mixing technology we now have twelve wonderful songs performed by Ray and the current incarnation of the Basie Orchestra. The results are wonderful and even include “Every Saturday Night” a song Ray never recorded to album. The ground breaking CD is the first time ever that a whole entire album has been made using a pre-existing vocal track and a new instrumental backing.

The only bad thing I could possibly say is that I suspect the keyboards may also been re-recorded and are not in fact being played by the one and only Ray Charles. Hopefully that is not the case but even with that said if you are a fan this is a must have to your library.

This concert captures many of Ray’s classic hits that he still played even in his later years. Songs like “Busted”, “I Can’t Stop Loving You” and even his own rendition of the Beatles classic, “The Long and Winding Road”.

The albums ends with his classic, “Georgia on My Mind” a song that is a perfect way to not even keep Georgia on your mind but the irreplaceable Ray Charles on your mind as well.
