Not your Daddy’s bowling alley Print E-mail

Hugh Heffner has one, Michael Jordan has one and even our President, George Dubyah has one. Have you guessed yet? The answer is: a huge bowling alley! Not to be outshone by any of these high rollers, Chicagoans have the next best thing, Lucky Strike Lanes.

Lucky Strike Lanes
322 E. Illinois St.
Chicago, IL 60611
(312) 245-8331
Hours: Noon to 1 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays
Noon to 2 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays

These upscale lanes are located inside the AMC Theaters River East 21 building on E. Illinois. I’ll warn you ahead of time, parking is pretty much impossible to find on the street and as always, the lots are either full or overpriced.

ATMOSPHERE

I’m afraid this is not your Daddy’s bowling alley. Instead, it’s an upscale bowling lounge complete with billiards, three large bars, a restaurant and a lounge area in the back for those who just want to sit back, relax and enjoy the sounds of the DJ.

Lucky Strike is located in major cities across the country and has maintained its eclectic and funky vibe in each location. The colors are bright and inviting, the lights are dimmed and above the lanes hang several big screen TV’s devoted to showcasing the work of up-and-coming artists.

CROWD

At Lucky Strike, it just so happens that their strict dress code leaves no room to wear your replica “Big Lebowski” bathrobe. (I know its heart breaking!) After 9 p.m. you must be 21 and over to enter and you won’t be allowed in if you don’t meet the requirements of the dress code. Dress as though you would be looking to get into a night club, no sweats, no jersey’s, no cut off’s and no hats.

The crowd is a mix of all ages. It starts to get very busy around 9 and I suggest that you either call ahead to reserve a lane or arrive before 9 to secure a spot for you and your guests.

ENTERTAINMENT / EVENTS

Lucky Strike always seems to have something fun going on. Last summer a radio station hosted Nick Lachey’s record release party and it gummed up E. Illinois for miles. I would keep an ear out for fun events that might further entice you and your bowling buds to grab your best pair of bowling shoes and hit the lanes.

SPIRITS

Along with bowling alley favorites like Miller Light and Budweiser, these shiny lanes reflect an unusually alluring drink menu for a bowling alley. Once you take a seat by your lane, a lovely waitress wearing black knee high boots, a short skirt and a tank top arrives to introduce her self, and keep you well stocked for the rest of the evening. I do suggest giving the French Martini a try, in no time flat you truly will believe that 56 is a great score!

GRUB

There is sure to be something on this menu that will strike your fancy. I had a hard time deciding on what to choose. Unfortunately, my waitress was of little to no help so here are a few suggestions. If you are just looking for a few snacks, the spinach and cheese dip is hard to leave while you take your turn to bowl. Lane favorites such as cheese fries and nachos are just what your snack seeking group may need. If you are in the mood for something a little bit bigger, grab one of their juicy burgers, supreme salads or gourmet pizzas, they are sure to hit the spot.

PRICES

The good news is, there is no cover charge, the bad news is, prices are a bit higher than what you are going to pay for the average bowling night out. Check out the rates on the web site; if you can make it before nine the rates are lower. Consider reserving a lane before 9 p.m for $45 any day of the week, if you plan on going on a Friday or Saturday, the rate jumps up to $65. It’s not so bad when you split this between a group of 6 or more.

WHY IT’S UNIQUE

Finally, go bowling without dodging little kids. This upscale bowling environment allows for a bit more of an adult feel. Have a few drinks, bowl, play some pool and then relax in the lounge. This is a great first date place, you might just get lucky and not strike out at this upscale bowling alley.
