Parallel parking a car in Los Angeles traffic is no easy task, but talented comedian Daniel Tosh managed to do it while talking on the phone with Lumino about his future plans, his current success, and his upcoming shows at the Improv. Already having had his own Comedy Central Special, with another one due out on April 29th, a soon-to-be-released DVD, and talks with the Fox network about a possible show, Tosh seems like he's already pretty successful by most people's standards. Yet, when asked about what day in his life made him realize he was successful, Tosh said, “Hopefully tomorrow… I live in Los Angeles. And you feel like a failure every day, pretty much…” However, that's not to say the Tosh isn't happy with what he's already achieved. “I'm content, and I want more,” Tosh said.

His TV show with Fox isn't a given, but Tosh hopes that it'll pan out in his favor. “I'm trying to write a TV show right now with FOX so hopefully that'll turn into something. It's just a regular sitcom,” Tosh said. “It'll be horrible, if I'm so lucky it'll even ever get made. I don't know. I'd like to have a half hourly night talk show on a cable channel soon.... I'd like to make fun of people on a nightly basis.” Wouldn't we all?

As a standup comedian, Tosh does a fair amount of traveling, which allows for his best friend to be a shared commodity of sorts. “My dog is important to me. Simon. He's a Maltese. He's four years old with really bad hips. He's had a lot of surgeries. I share him. I co-own him with my ex-girlfriend. When I'm on the road she gets him.” Traveling also allows Tosh to perform a plethora of shows, some of which haven't always gone the way he'd like. “Sometimes the crowd is like 'that's awful' and I was like 'that was the greatest night of my life.'” I've only had two or three hell gigs. But I've had thousands of gigs that were horrible. I'd say that one in every three shows isn't great. Everything contributes to it, [like] my attitude. I do shows for private functions and colleges and they just don't have the general principles down as far as what would make a good show…” Tosh said. And how much does his own performance have to do with a bad show? “I blame it on anything before I take the personal blame for it.”

Tosh is very open when it comes to enjoying the comedy of other performers. “I love a lot of people,” Tosh said. “I think tons of people are really funny… If I just start thinking I think of tons of people that I like. There are so many people that are really good at doing standup, and for different reasons.”

Tosh lives in California, a cross-country change from growing up in Florida, where his allergies where often difficult to live with. When asked how his allergies are currently, Tosh replied “Living in California I'm great. It's only when I travel to the south east. And I don't know if that's because I hate southerners or the pollen.” While living in California, Tosh dreams of being the mastermind behind the next great invention. “If American Inventor, that TV show, comes back, I'll go on it. I had a great idea but I refuse to tell anyone about it because I don't want it to be stolen. I refuse to [patent it],” Tosh said. “I just wanna get to a point where I say it to one person and then they can do all the work.”

Tosh will be arriving in Chicago, or more accurately, Schaumburg, to perform a series of shows at the Improv in early February. His travels have brought him to Chicago many times, but he doesn't have any particular places he likes to visit. “I've been there many times. I work so I'm not too much of a touristy guy. I'll go out with my friends and comics and just hang out at a bar or restaurant. Nothing mandatory…to be quite honest, while working in Schaumburg, I don't know how much of the in-the-city stuff I'll be doing.” Tosh also spoke of losing a bet to another comic that the Chicago Bears would make it into the Super Bowl. “I still think the Bears are going to get horribly blown out of the Super Bowl and I'm banking on it.” Home-town football fever doesn't concern him much, though. “I refuse to care about people that would not see a comic because he doesn't pander to my city. I'm not from there, so of course not…” Tosh said.

Tosh will perform at the Improv from February 1st through the 3rd. He says that attendees can expect “Tons of racism. I would say that, a lot of sarcasm, and hopefully nobody demanding their money back. But I do offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee on all my shows.” Really? “No.” And, lastly, Tosh had this to say about his upcoming Chicago performances: “…That venue is way too big for me and I'll feel sad if it's empty.”
