Inside the genius of Dave Chappelle Print E-mail

Over the last twelve years, James Lipton has hosted Inside the Actors Studio interviewing stars of film, theater, television and music. You may know James Lipton more from the parody Will Ferrell did of him many times on SNL. He’s a character in himself that is a bit dramatic but you believe he’s done his research and has a respect for whom he’s interviewing.

Inside the Actors Studio is an eleven-time Emmy-nominated show and is Bravo’s longest running original series. It is a forum that allows the guest to share their secrets and experiences of their craft that is surprisingly simple in concept but very engaging. Recently certain episodes have been offered on iTunes and now Bravo has partnered up with Shout Factory and is releasing them on DVD.

Dave Chappelle appeared on the show this past February and is by far one of the best they have ever produced and quite possibly the longest. This is one of the first interviews he conducted after both leaving his Comedy Central show and arriving back to the states after his stay in Africa. Anyone who is a Dave Chappelle fan will enjoy the intimate and openness of this almost two hour interview. It’s at times funny, truthful and all very real that give you a little bit more of an insight into the person that is Dave Chappelle. It is also a more relaxed setting than the one he conducted months later on the Oprah Show.

The DVD opens with a new introduction and insights by Lipton that gives you a background on the taping of the episode. This particular one has a pretty interesting chain of events. 700 people were in line by 5 PM for a 7 PM showing which is delayed after Dave’s plane is rerouted. They keep the crowd busy by playing episodes of Chappelle Show. Dave finally arrives on stage at 10 PM and the interview lasts until the early hours of 2 AM. The dedicated crowd hangs in there for a total of 9 hours and watching this DVD it appears was well worth the time.

These days it’s almost mandatory to include bonus material on a DVD. Unlike the episodes available on iTunes, the DVD’s are offering a bonus feature of unaired clips called, “Great Moments That Didn’t Make The Cut.” These aren’t your typical throw away outtakes either. Among them are Dave discussing his audition with Mel Brooks and his pitch to Comedy Central.

So if you are a fan of Inside The Actors Studio or Dave Chappelle this is a must have to add to your collection. Besides where else can you find out who besides Richard Pryor was Chappelle’s first biggest influence? I’ll give you a hint it’s a rabbit. Got you curious? Go buy the DVD.
