The internet is a powerful tool that many new musicians are using in their favor. In this case, Boys Like Girls is using the wonders of the internet, particularly MySpace and YouTube, to gain themselves, and their new self-titled album, more exposure.

"Boys Like Girls"
(Red Ink/Columbia)
Released August 22, 2006

Boys Like Girls is currently on tour promoting their new album and will reach the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago on December 19, 2006.

Released at the end of the summer, Boys Like Girls is the first album from the young Boston-based pop band. The band’s website draws a direct connection between Boys Like Girls and All-American Rejects, Panic! At the Disco, and Fallout Boy, but even listeners with the least discerning of ears can easily make that connection, and fans of those bands will already be familiar with all that the Boys Like Girls twelve-track album has to offer.

The album starts out with “The Great Escape,” a seriously bubbly teen grow-up song that is scheduled to be released for radio play sometime in 2007. It’s one of the album’s highlights, but with lyrics like “It’s goodbye. But we got one more night. Let’s get drunk and ride around,” that isn’t saying too much. American Pie, anyone?

The other highlights that have a few memorable hooks include “Five Minutes To Midnight” and “Hero/Heroine,” the video to which became the 29th most linked song on YouTube. “Holiday” and “Thunder,” both down tempo and a lot less bouncy than the other tracks, add a bit of much needed variety to the album. “Dance Hall Drug” has an interesting rhythm sequence to it, but it’s still too similar to all the other songs on the CD to really stand out.

Is the CD well-produced? Yes. Is it a quality recording? Also yes. If Boys Like Girls had produced this album four or five years ago, there might be some much deserved hype about to come its way. However, it is brand new and, unfortunately, sounds too much like too many other things that came before it. Kudos to them, though, for all the successful self-promotion.

Boys Like Girls are a great band, and I disagree with your review.

They dont lack originality. How can you say that when other bands are going around buying rights to songs that were hits 50 years ago and making it their own?
These people are the ones that lack originality.

Boys Like Girls should get more credit and praise for producing such an appealing album to teens.
